Moscow Final: Who is Russia's Top Dog? Davydenko vs Safin

This is a battle for who really is Russia's top dog. Daydenko has been Russia's #1 ranked player for the past two years, but Safin is the player with 2 slams to his credit.

Head to head: Safin leads 2-1, all their matches have been played in 2006.
2006 Estoril Portugal Clay R16 Davydenko 4-6 6-1 6-2
2006 ATP Masters Series Indian Wells Hard R32 Safin 7-6(5) 3-6 6-4
2006 Dubai U.A.E. Hard R32 Safin 4-6 6-2 6-2

Davydenko has 8 career titles (3 in 2006), including the 2004 Kremlin Cup.
Safin has 15 career titles (none in 2006), and interestingly enough, he's never won his home tournament.

I have a feeling Safin will want this title more, but will he be able to handle the pressures from the home crowd?

Actually he's won St.Petersburg twice, unless you claim that "home" refers only to hometown

It probably does; for example Federer has won in Gstaad, but never in his home tournament (Basel).

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

My man Hewitt won in his old hometown twice [Adelaide 98 & 00] plus his new hometwon~ Sydney [4-times & 1-TMC also] ~~however he`s was denied his only chance to win his home-country slam by Safin [AO 05 final]

I'll be rooting for Kolya tomorrow because he's my absolute favorite. But I will give a few of my cheers for Safin because he needs this title for his confidence and ranking.

Safin.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

I wish Marat wins, but it'll be Kolya, no doubt!

BTW, Davydenko was extremely nice in interview after the match with Santoro-- very charming smile, jokes, and good answers. He said he wanted Marat to win in the other semi because it'll be interesting final-- good for the crowd!
He changed a lot (maybe after blogging? )-- acts and speaks as a real top 5 player!

Wow! I am the only one who thinks Davy wins in 2 sets!

I'm afraid it's Davydenko, but then again I'm always pessimistic when it comes to Marat...

Tarpi ( aka Marat's sexay dad ) will threaten Davydenko "You let Safin win or else, no DC final for you"
