Rio R1: Thiem def. Tipsarevic 6-4 7-5

Decent first match on clay for Domi. Tipsy was playing a solid and consistent baseline game, and had decent success with it as Domi was still a bit loose on his groundies. The end to the match was rather underwhelming as Tipsarevic broke himself to love at 5-5 by making three UEs, but I'll take it. Lajovic next

Thiem needs to step up, not a very good match from him, Tipsarevic is not good on clay and should not give Thiem that much trouble.

With ferrer, cuevas, nishi out, it would be a travesty for thiem not to win this, cause for a 500 this is now an absolute joke of a tournament.

Knowing his recent form, I won't be surprised if he gets knocked out as well early on though.

Still, without a doubt his absolute best chance to gain enough point to stay in the top 10

Domi seemed average at best. Forehand was uncharacteristically passive, especially early on - later he started finding some great angles. Backhand started with some great DTL winners but was pretty poor otherwise. Return wasn't great. The only thing which looked consistently good was his serve, his kicker is almost unplayable on clay.

At the moment the only things giving me hope are his victory over Zverev and his admission that he hasn't been playing well recently.

Hm that doesn't sound too good.
Didn't expect him to magically play instantly superb again the moment he is on clay, but still he really really needs to find his game again soon. An early exit in this field would be shameful

No idea what all the negative comments are about. He was still playing on indoor hard in Europe last Friday so he was hardly likely to produce his best clay court tennis straight away. Over all it was a decent first match on the dirt and despite the relatively close scoreline the result never looked in doubt. He was possibly a bit too passive at times, maybe a response to breaking himself at *3-2 in the first with a couple of poor errors, but given how he has played so far this year I am not going to be overly critical of that. On the contrary, it was nice to see him actually playing some fairly long rallies again.

Kind of funny since I tuned in at 6-4 4-5, and then Thiem won 12 straight points He may not get a better chance to win a 500 tournament this year, and it'll be interesting how he deals with the natural claycourters he's going to play in the next two matches.

Enjoy every moment of tennis. Enjoy the rise of the young, the brilliance of the peak, and the passion of the old. Enjoy dominance, enjoy diversity.

Never take anything for granted, just learn with some Nishikori fans who were already counting with 750 points in the golden swing.

Thiem IS the favorite for this tournament, but he's not in top form, so it's not a given by any means. He should easily beat Lajovic, but then I can see the QF against Delbonis or Schwartzman as a complicated match, let alone the SF against Fognini if he gets there.

Nah I'm not taking it for granted, but for not diving the rankings it's really a must for him to win Rio, and at least on paper it won't get easier than that I guess.

But underdogs are always tricky for domi, especially in his recent form. But I should be a able to watch the lajovic match tonight, so I can judge on my own

I also wouldn't take anything for granted but no one in the draw is going to serve him off court and as long as he his putting a decent number of returns into play he is likely to have plenty of break opportunities against most opponents as long as he doesn't revert to his brainless ball bashing version.
