Then Tsonga played a lot better while Goffin was not clutch at all.

For me a very surprising winner. Actually in the last weeks I thought for the first time that Berdych and Tsonga aren't that good anymore and maybe won't win any more big titles (500 or even more). But I was wrong.

Tsonga surprised me very positively, especially in set 3.

Well done to both players.
Goffin could have won the first set 6-1 yes, but in the 2nd Jo was the better player. Maybe could have been broken early in that set but he had many opportunities to break Goffin during the whole set. I know he didn't have BPs until the last game but he was taking control of many rallies in Goffin's serve only for Clownga to botch it with silly mistakes.

Re: Rotterdam F: Tsonga def Goffin 4-6 6-4 6-1

Great first set from Goffin. Good second set. But that second set was suddenly over and then the lights went out for Goffin. Not completely unexpected after 2 busy weeks.

I like how with his quick legs he still manages to get some balls back. Seems like he just couldn't do it anymore in that last set. Too bad because this Tsonga wasn't playing his best tennis. Some complete misses here and there.

Still a good start of the year for Goffin and finally in that top 10. I hope he can keep it up.

For me, his career needs to be about maximizing his potential, there are certain things he cannot change about himself, and thankfully for him - unlike many on this board - he believes there is more to tennis than firepower and height, and he doesn't fret to capitalize on what he has. As long as he keeps pushing his own boundaries which the players with easy power are less likely to do as they have abundant of that "talent", he'll wind up as a very unorthodox player who left his mark among the elite, and for me that's good enough. Top Ten is his singular, most worthy achievement to this date and no one can take that bit of history away from him.

Saw him save some set points at 5-4 but then I had to tune out for work. Not surprised he collapsed after dropping that game, but sad it happened. Still a good run as he reached back to back finals. Hopefully he can recharge himself for the upcoming events.

---

Goffin stopped being aggressive and paid the price. Of course Jo took it to the next level moving like a fluid leopard from side to side hitting those booming forehands beautifully, but Goffin shouldn't have let it get to him - that's when he goes back to playing passive...but this is where he ought to have continued playing aggressive, but unfortunately the toil from the past two weeks too must have taken a toll for in the third set, he was simply not trying.

A few things that Team Goffin needs to do ASAP to make Top Ten sustainable:

- play more optional events to keep the points up - he has too much to defend right now, and he could use some additional points playing non-mandatories in the middle of them.
- make that aggressive mindset permanent - this pretty much requires a drill-sergeant approach provided Goffin gives the consent- something that makes him want to take it to his opponent all the time. His best shotmaking and most focused tennis emerges when he plays aggressive, and as soon as he steps down mentally into the traditional tennis mentality (break once, hold till next set), he is usually thrown off the court with great ease.
- Improve his net game. He looks timid and lost out there.
- Improve his precision on the lob - you want your lobs to go deep - at least a 1/3 behind the service line. most of his lobs barely make it past the service line (pls take a 2 week course with Rusty next!)
- Improve the stamina - Unless we want his H2H vs the Top Ten to look as preposterous as 5-50, better start preparing him for the new level so he can play week-in week-out making SFs and Fs without his body giving out. He has to have a body that can support his on-court cunning.

For the rest, I am quite happy as one of his oldest fans on the board with what he's achieved this week. Now there's more room for improvement, more work to do.

In life when you stop, you slide... So keep striving David!

Yes yes. Maybe also develop a slice. Volleys and slice are the two things I usually think he should improve, he seems to have improved his serve a bit which is good, hopefully he has the capacity to keep on improving

My anti-jinx strategy worked perfectly in this tournament
Tsonga really looked good whole tournament, except maybe 1st match where his focus was little bit off. Actually he is playing well this year, just not good enough in big matches.

What a nice week from Tsonga
To say I didn't expect him to take the title would be an understatement. Considering his path here, this is probably his 3rd best title (Toronto and Bercy are #1 and #2 of course). This is Tsonga's 2nd ATP 500 title, it was a long overdue as the first one was in 2009.
