Which type of losses hurt the most?

P.S. This isn't related to any specific player.

By type I mean at which stage does the player's loss hurt the most? If you ask me, I'd prefer it to be a straight beatdown at earlier rounds of a tourney than getting to a tug of war in the final and ultimately losing, breaking millions of hearts in the process. In the former type loss, there is less pain since he wasn't close to winning and have room for improvement but in the latter, its mind boggling and painful in the sense one is bewildered what he could have done not to lose.

Thoughts?

Re: Which type of losses hurt the most?

As a fan every loss hurts the same. Obviously in the bigger tournaments (GSs) it hurts more no matter it was close or it was straight loss or if it was in the 1st round or in the final.

For players it depends, are we talking about the likes of fed, nadal, novack? They enter the tournaments expecting to win it all especially the big ones so I'd imagine it will hurt them to leave the tournament without the trophy either way. no matter it was 1st round or the final. was up 3-1 in the 5th or lost 0-6 in the fifth. It will hurt you and pain you about the same.. you might think about the lead you had but the pain is the same regardless of the result.

For players with M.Zverev's or Istomin's caliber (no offense) they obviously left Australia happy even though they lost in the QF and the 4th round but still for them this is a big result. Maybe it would hurt them if they lost in the 1st round depending on who they played or how the draw was for them?

P.S: it seems that ROGER's win against rafa still hurts you. Especially that he had the lead in the 5th with 3-1 and a chance to go up 4-2. It's understandable don't worry. I hope the pain goes away when he wins Barcelona

Where you have the talent and skills but don't believe you can win.

- Roger's string of past losses to Nadal.
- Goffin's string of losses last year (esp vs Raonic)
- Pre-2014 Wawa losses

Please don't make it into specific player(s) discussion.

Simply assume you're a pro player and discuss which loss will hurt the most.

LOL.

of course this coming from Nadal fan.

As Nadal keep getting beaten by nobodies in early rounds.

Imagine if Federer had lost in early rounds of all those clay finals where he faced against Nadal and if Nadal hadn't lost to nobodies in all those Wimbies and fast HC.

Especially to a nobodies.

Not only hurts much, but super embarrassing as well.

Remember Nadal-Rosol and Nadal-Fognini and how Nadal reacted after the matches?

It seems the loss hurts rafaism much worse than it did to Nadal himself.

Re: Which type of losses hurt the most?

I think it hurts the most in a grandslam final when you lost against your easiest match-up opponent who has mental problem with you and who is also 5 years older.

There, I didn't even mention specific players.

Care to elaborate? You lose in R1 when you're out of form and have LOTS of room for improvement but when you win 4-6 matches in a row to reach the final and lose there's the feeling one might have that he had given his best and still lost, thereby shattering his confidence.

Not really.
Many players still win R1 even in their worst form.
And a few players can reach finals in their bad form.

So a loss in a final while he knew very well he was in bad form (injuries, health issues, lack of practice etc) doesn't really hurt, and in fact, they could be happy knowing that they can still reach finals in that condition.

Only one dimensional player reach finals only if they are in good form.

I give you an example (and this is a published quote): Federer said he would have been already happy had he lost in quarter or semi of 2017 AO.

agree 100%

and its why Federer's tears at AO 09 were so apropo. he was truly in control of that match and choked it away. all of that culminated not only after a run to the final in that tournament ,but also to the finals in FO 08 and W 08 the year before, also losing to Rafa in devastating fashion. that AO 09 was a true heartbreaker in every sense of the word

I'll take 0-6 0-6 anyday over a choke.

R1 loss = less prize money and ranking points
The "win 4-6 matches in a row and lose" talk is pure hindsight. I don't think any professional ever counts his chickens and thinks about winning 4-5 matches ahead of their next match. Pros only think about the match ahead; at most, they will only look at their quarter of the draw.
