Buenos Aires R2: [1]Nishikori def. Schwartzman 5-7 6-2 6-2

A pretty bumpy match for Kei, started out off the blocks fast with a break but then slowly wavered and unable to convert a break pt at 5-5 in the first started making some wild errors to be broken. Kei's energy seemed low giving away a lot of freebies on return games while Diego maintained strong on his service games. Diego deserved the set with very solid play while Kei was prone to make bad mistakes here and there, and was harrassed on the second serve in particular.

Then 2-2 turned things around, some good returns and aggression with some poor misses from Diego off neutral balls allowed Kei to seize momentum and never really allowed Diego a foothold, even though Kei did drop serve once more in the third but did not allow Diego much luxury on serve, with fiery returns and dropshots really hurting Diego if Diego did not commit an error before that. Kei needed an MTO for his leg after leading the third, not sure knee or calf but he'll need to recover fast if so given he plays Rio next week. Certainly appeared to rush shots in last 4 games.

Diego should be proud of his efforts in front of the home crowd and was unlucky to face Kei early here. Certainly gave his all just as we saw in Istanbul, and full respect for that.

Three shots for Kei to work on (bit inconsistent/sloppy): serve, run around IOFH, and BHDTL

The scoreline was a typical R1 match for Kei (dropping a set) but his actual play late in the 1st set was some of the most lethargic I've ever seen. He really did pick it up in set 2 and 3 though. Still very wonky, luckily doesn't have to be much better against John Sousa. He might be motivated to make a statement given how John had humiliated Kei in front of his home crowd with a hex.

Nishikori needs to "vulture" this tournament as people around this forum would put it.

No wonder Nishikori needs to play in tournaments with this kind of field since he can no longer put away 35 year olds

Scwartzman was horrible from whatever little I saw in this match.

Speak for yourself. 23-11 record and 9-2 in slams not strong enough to put Federer away even with a break in the 5th...

Diego was pretty solid making Kei play some awkward rallies at times but he did start to make more misses from second set, understandable considering how many balls Kei made him play at times.
paca and nachotuerto like this.

put it another way. He is giving others a shot at the elusive Memphis title up for free
But seriously he needs to win here and do well in Rio, being right behind Milos. A top 4 seeding for IW would be helpful.

Nishikori is graciously giving the world a chance to see a Karlovic vs Isner final in Memphis...

The Japanese needs not only go for that top 4 seeding at Indian Wells, but he needs to watch out for Nadal and Federer coming up after him for the French Open and Wimbledon seedings.

Well for 3 years Kei dispatched bots and serve-dependents one by one in finals and leadup to finals. Maybe time for a change.

true it is pretty risky the situation and he has quite a lot of points from clay season (though Nadal has more but in 2 big tournaments being MC/Barca, rather than spread out). Personally the big goal is top 4 for USO that is paramount. Unfortunately it comes so late in the season so much could change before that point. That's the pity about the ranking system, Kei's best slam is at a place when everyone else will have gained pts...

Only watched the first set which was a bit loose with plenty of errors after the first break and the missed chance for the double break. Glad the match became more routine after that (at least judging by the scoreline), unlike in Memphis against the American conglomerate of servebots and mugs, his remaining matches here should be worth watching. Great decicion to play here and in Rio instead of Memphis.

Dang it! My prediction of Kei wining the tournament without dropping a set has been broken.

Good stuff from Diego, I really thought he had a chance after that first set. Kei started to Kei'ng since 3-1 to 5-7. Then Diego just got out powered, as most of us expected.

Not much separated the two in the first set. It looked like an even match. Look like Shwartzman ran out of steam
