In my opinion, it is very difficult to come to a conclusion about which of these players was better than the others, I'd like to hear what you guys think.

Re: Greatest Tennis player out of these?

Connors. 8 Slams, 109 singles titles (ATP record), 268 weeks at number one (160 consecutive). He was the better all around player as well.

Depends what you value the most.

Peak - McEnroe
Extended Domination/Consistency - Lendl
Overall best career/Longevity - Connors

Re: Greatest Tennis player out of these?

Natural Ability: John McEnroe comfortably ahead of Connors and Lendl. I would go with Lendl as the best of the lot. Both Connors and Lendl has longevity, both won 8 slams, Lendl did make more Slam finals and that is a significant achievement in my mind. Connors and Lendl also had extended stays at #1 both continuously and total weeks but I believe that Connors benefited from a ranking system almost a little rigged in his favor. Think Borg was robbed of several weeks at #1 due to the ranking system of the mid 70s. Lendl adapted his game pretty well to make a few deep runs at the elusive Wimbledon championships and got thwarted by some wonderful grass court players. And he changed the fitness standards in Tennis for good. All great champions but I will give Lendl a slight edge.

Re: Greatest Tennis player out of these?

It's difficult, because the three have similar achievements, with the most obvious difference is Connors longevity.

I don't give it to McEnroe because he has the least slam titles (7) and in only 2 different slams. His FO results are pitiful, with only 1 final in 10 appearances. He also has no AO title and only one semifinal despite playing them during his peak years (with exception of 1984).

As for Connors and Lendl, they are quite similar in achievements (number of slams titles in theree diffrent slams and number of weeks #1) I'd give it to Connors.
Lendl played almost all slams during 1979 to 1994, and yet he only won the same slams as Connors, who didn't even play FO during hs peak years (1974-1978). Connor also had a AO title and a final in despite playing only twice in AO, and he had records number of slams semis that have been broken by RF. connors is also the only player to win USO in three different surfaces.
And the first player to win slams in three fifferent surfaces.

Re: Greatest Tennis player out of these?

Generally speaking that's only btw Connors and Lendl. Difficult to choose who is the best one. A little more than a half of me suggests that Czech has to be above the American. I have a great respect to the Connors' longevity but despite his age crucial BIG numbers speak for Lendl as a superior player

@Slasher1985 Could I ask what exactly may have made the rankings favorable for Connors at that time?

Well, it was a system based on average. You had to play less tournaments and be efficient at them, but no less than 12, Connors did that. Vilas always played a lot for instance. But I don't see it as in favor of Connors, other players could have played as efficiently as him too. The late 70s and all of the 80s had an average system too and Connors was not #1 for almost all of it.

Re: Greatest Tennis player out of these?

@Slasher1985 I see. It actually sounds an anti-vulturing system frankly. Although does it weigh differently on smaller and bigger tournaments? My first impression reading stats about Connors is that he plays too many but only few big titles.

Doesn't Connors have like 268 weeks at #1 and not 263?

Re: Greatest Tennis player out of these?

I think Connors gets the edge, just, from me also given the extra titles and longevity. I would have put Borg in the poll also, but I think everyone would have picked him over the other guys, I know I would have.

Re: Greatest Tennis player out of these?

All excellent players, but Ivan Lendl for revolutionizing the game in the mid 80s to the power baseline player.
Sure he could not win at SW19, and had some shortcomings there against good S&V, but made up for that elsewhere.
Should have won more French titles too, if not for his ultimately doomed obsession with Wimby.
