Have you ever been to a Challenger tournament?

So, next week there will be a CH in Bergamo, which is not far from where I live (Milan), and I was thinking about going there, maybe for the Finals or semis (hey, it's free )
I just want to hear some experiences, if someone here has ever been to one, is it worthwile, should I expect a huge mugfest, etc...
Cheers!

Everyone on here glory supports the big4. No chance anyone's been to a Challenger m8.

Been to lots of them. If you go to ones that have decent Entry Lists, it's much fun. You're sitting close to the court, can talk to the players after the match and see lots of matches for little money (never went to one that was free though).

It's kinda like a club tournament but then with pretty good tennis. Enjoy!

It's much less compared to lots of other discussion places about tennis (and the reason why I frequent here -- only goes to others at times to preserve my sanity ), I mean @Johnny Groove also participated in one (even if it as an Alt in a Challenger Q from what I know ).

I would go. By the time the tournament reaches semifinal, the mug fest is usually over.

Re: Have you ever been to a Challenger tournament?

Ya but being from Israel we have no better tournaments so it's not like I have a choice :P

There's definitely some good tennis in challengers, but there's also lots of clowning around. Pay attention to the players and who's playing, if u catch 2 players playing well it can lead to some great matches.

That said the last CH match I watched was the unbelievable clownfest between Lacko and Berrer so who am I kidding

Thanks, will do!
Actually there should be some good players: Seppi got a wildcard, Pierre-Hugues Herbert (although I have no clue what to expect from him in singles :P ). There is Gojowczyk whom I recall seeing play on some indoor tournament and it stuck as someone who had an enjoyable game, and that deaf korean boy (Duckhee Lee) who might be interesting, we'll see!

At the very least Bergamo has a very nice Old town, so there's always that to my little trip :P

Re: Have you ever been to a Challenger tournament?

I prefer Challengers to bigger events. Most events feel more intimate and you can follow matches better because you are closer to the courts. Bergamo always has a good entry list. If it is free, that is even better! Furthermore, if you have never been before, this will be an amazing realization that the difference between ATP events and Challengers really is not that big; the quality of tennis is high and many of the players you may see were Top 100 players for an extended period (Lacko, Chiudinelli, Dodig, Nedovyeosov, Brands, Sijsling) and many others are likely to become solid members of the Top 100 (Lee, Marterer, Halys, Napolitano). Others may remain Challenger players forever but they have an attacking game that will be nice to watch on a fast indoor court (Ignatik, Ivashka, Basic).

(Also, Bergamo is such a beautiful city!)

We have Lacko on the Entry List
Well if it comes to the worst I can still laugh at the horror show!

Re: Have you ever been to a Challenger tournament?

I have been to some satellite events in the UK, one in Nottingham around ten years ago I sat on the table next to Jamie Murray in the club restaurant. There were some alright-ish players like Goodall, Bloomfield, Lacko and a few others. The tournament wasn't anymore organised than amateur events and you'd just stumble on matches instead of knowing what times you'd find everyone at. If you like tennis the tournaments are no worse than others but obviously they don't have the satr or 'celebrity' status that many armchair fans look for these days. You can get quite personal with many undiscovered next gens which gives these sort of tournaments a special status.

Re: Have you ever been to a Challenger tournament?

I have been to the Dallas and Las Vegas challengers. Very cool experiences. You can get very close to the court and to the players. You see the raw nature of professional tennis at that level.

I was a ball boy for a challenger in high school. Almost got nailed in the temple from an around the net shot by Sergi Sagsian. Pretty cool, and I managed to dodge it in time, but I knew right then and there that I wasn't cut out to ball boy at an ATP 250 or grand slam. People who ball boy at that level know to duck and cover before is even struck.

You can tell the difference in ball boy quality. I have seen some lazy, poor and incompetent ball boying at challengers before. It's frustrating to the players

If you are a real tennis fan any professional tournament is worth going to. Personally I have been to one ATP event, two challengers and about 30 futures.

I think any real tennis fan would relish the chance to watch live tennis even at challenger level.
I went to Dallas last year and watched Rublev. Not as skinny as i thought and tall as well. Strikes the ball huge. But also quite mental.

I thought about going to Dallas this year but Tiafoe lost before the quarters and Harrison made it to the final so i couldn't bring myself to go just out of principle. No way i'm paying money to watch a trumpster.
