Toni Nadal decided it is his last season on tour; Rafa not been told until after AO

Uncle Toni reveals this year is his last year on tour with Rafa Nadal, as he wants to focus on working in the Academy.

Absolutely shocked as I think many of us thought Toni would be with Rafa on tour as long as Rafa is playing.

Toni Nadal' SHOCKER: 'It will be my last season with Rafa on the Tour'

Originally from here: Intervista a Toni Nadal: ?Il 2017 sarà la mia ultima stagione con Rafael? - Il Tennis Italiano

Quote:
´By next year I won´t follow Rafael on the Tour anymore, but I will work only in our academy. I want to take care of the formation of young talents, which is the most important moment in a tennis player´s growth. The relationship with my nephew has always been good, over all these years we never had any to argue about. But until he was 17 I decided everything, then the agent Carlos Costa came, his father got closer and everybody had his own opinion. And the truth is that every year I decide even less, until the point that I won´t decide anything anymore! I travelled with Rafa for many years, now I want to deal with the training of the young people and our academy is the ideal place.´

Toni also added that Francisco Roig and Moya should remain in his team, 'unless Rafa will add some other.'
Edit: turns out Rafa wasn't involved in the decision and he didn't tell Rafa about this during the AO so that Rafa can focus on playing.
Toni Nadal, sobre su decisión de abandonar a final de temporada: ?Me voy, pero no le hago ninguna trastada a mi sobrino?

Quote:
The decision, known by the player's father and also by Carlos Moya (not by the tennis player, focusing on the Australian Open final), unfolds in an environment of naturalness and does not close the door for his uncle and nephew to return to work Together next year, albeit sporadically. Toni leaves, but can return at any time because the relationship is still fantastic

Congratulate Rafa on an amazing comeback. I don’t think either of us would believe we would be in the Final of the Australian Open when we saw each other at your academy 4 or 5 months ago . I’m happy for you. I would have been happy to lose too. The comeback was perfect as it was. Tennis is a tough sport, there is no draws. If there’s gonna be one, I would have been happy to accept it tonight and share it with Rafa really.

He's been finally pushed out of team. Hmmm. Interesting.
I'm wondering if it's gonna be Rafa's last year on tour as well?

Didn't Rafa once say that the moment he and Toni parted ways is when he retires from tennis? Could be wrong though.

Sad to hear. I will miss seeing him with his hotel hat. For Rafa it must be tough to not seeing his uncle when he was with him since he was a kid and shared all the success with him. Anyway, it's not that long until Rafa retires.

It's not 'parting ways' if Toni is just working primarily at their academy
Bear in mind that Nadal in the past had no clue he'd open up an academy when he did

And I think it's sort of irrelevant, Nadal has been on tour long enough with Toni that if he plays a season or two on without him it's not like he'll be missing out on some key hidden info or tips. And honestly especially playing at an old age it might be good to have someone else around as far as advice and tactics

This is legitimately actually shocking news. It'll be very weird seeing Nadal play without Toni

It's still significant. I think over the years Uncle Toni has become a rock for him on the tour, especially when the rest of his family do not travel much with him. The impact is on a personal/emotional level rather than actual coaching IMO.

Wow. Didn't think I'd see the day.

By the way, I love Toni's implication that Rafa even to this day doesn't make his own decisions

I think that is the last season of Rafa as well.
