Exclamation Safin planning to retire in 2010

Wednesday, 4 October 2006, 13:52 GMT 14:52 UK
Safin planning to retire in 2010

Russia's Marat Safin says he will retire from tennis in 2010.

The 26-year-old, who won the US Open in 2000 and Australian Open in 2005, has slipped to 63rd in the world and split with coach Peter Lundgren in August.

"My last season will be 2010," the former world number one told L'Equipe. "I will be 30 years old and it will be time to move onto something different.

"The season has been very tough. If I had won half the games I should have, I would have a different ranking."

Safin, who plays fourth seed Mikhail Youzhny in the second round of the Open de Moselle on Wednesday, says his short-term goal is to return to the world's top 30.

I wouldn't pay too much notice to that.

A. He is mad
B. 2010 is ages away and anything can happen in that time

Exactly, which is why I find it silly that he would say such a thing!

Re: Safin planning to retire in 2010

What he's said that I believe is that he doubts at the age of 30 he'll still want to be running around a tennis court, but if he surprises himself and does, he'll keep playing. 2010 is not set in stone.

Fan of: Federer Safin Haas Nadal Santoro Agassi Tursunov's blog

"I couldn't even tell you who the No. 1 ranked tennis player in the world is right now," Federer said. "It's probably me, still. It is, isn't it?" The Onion

Russophilic member of the MTF Perv Squad--objectifying Tarpischev, Kafelnikov, and Volkov like whoa.

Re: Safin planning to retire in 2010

damn you Marat
I though you'll be the next Agassi

In 2005, just before she took the USO crown, Kim Clijsters announced, that she'll be retired after 2007.
Maybe( ) Marat will follow her footsteps just to win Madrid, Paris and then the AO in 2007

he may retire early.

Acasuso already said that he will retire in 2009 and he is 2 years younger, right?

Re: Safin planning to retire in 2010

its easy to say something like that when he's struggling..
but if Marat was in great form by 2010 i doubt he'd quit.

Re: Safin planning to retire in 2010

I'm sure Marat THINKS he's retiring in 2010. Somehow I have a feeling if he's, say, number 3 in the world, he won't be retiring.

Re: Safin planning to retire in 2010

I really hope he reconsiders ( he sure has the time for it.. ) I love watching Marat play, despite his tantrums at times! And as said above, if he manages to work his way back into the top 10 or even 5 in the world, then he might postpone his retirement.

DJOKOVIC - IVANOVIC - NADAL - V.WILLIAMS - SÖDERLING - CLIJSTERS - DEL POTRO

There are people who, instead of listening to what is being said to them, are already listening to what they are going to say themselves/Albert Guinon

Re: Safin planning to retire in 2010

Its not set in stone, but I think in general most tennis players choose to retire when they are around 30. I think its just the whole giving it an exact year that makes it sound worse.

Safin

Re: Safin planning to retire in 2010

Hmmm the publication might have taken the freedom to indicate 2010 specifically as Marat has indicated before that in 4 or 5 years, he might retire. Giving out an actual retirement year changes the tone of things completely. I still doubt Marat himself said "2010".

However, if he did - Please Marat, just shut up and play better.
