How Much Does Roger Federer Really Care Post U.S. Open?

Do you all think that after the Grand Slam season is over that Federer is really so enthusiastic about playing his A game?

In 2004 I don't think he played much at all between the U.S. Open and the TMC and in 2005 he just played Bangkok before the TMC.

I get the impression that as long as he's won 2 or 3 Grand Slams and his #1 ranking is secure for another year that he goes into the period between the U.S. Open and the TMC very half heartedly.

Its been three years since he's played the Madrid or Paris Masters! Why so long to play 2 of the 9 Masters events when he's the world #1? Surely he should have felt obliged to play at least one of them in 2004 or 2005.

This year it looks like he'll play Madrid but he will prolly drop out of Paris *especially if he plays in his home tournament*.

Thoughts?

AFAIK he was injured this time of the year both in 2004 and 2005, and played nothing between Bangkok and TMC, otherwise I believe he would have played at least his home tourney in Basel.

If I were him I wouldn't play at all after securing the year-end #1, what's more everyone here seems to not want him to play because apparently his dominance is so boring and blah

Um, he was injured during that period in both '04 and '05. That's why he didn't play.

This is what he said prior to the start of the tournament in Tokyo:

It's been a fantastic year and I don't want to break a fantastic year by not being professional," he said. "Motivation is not a problem."

"I'm only halfway through my career and I have a lot of tennis left," the 25-year-old said. "My motivation has always been to win grand slams and be number one. "All of a sudden to lose my motivation while I'm at the top is not something that makes sense."

he cares but its a time of the year when he seems to have bad luck form wise or injury wise.

even before the 04 and 05 injuries he struggled a bit with the end of year indoor circuit.... only a couple of titles in Vienna but he's never won any other, lost in a few basel finals and never did anything of great note in the indoor TMS events apart from a semi final in Madrid when Ferrero beat him, lost 2r Basel and early again at Paris and sacked Lundgren.

lets see what he can do this year, i expect him to pull from one of the TMS events.

Federer's ranking points could potentially be 8000+ by the end of November.

As you know, Roger was injured in the last two years at this time. However, regardless it still only makes sense for the #1 player to conserve himself as he sees necessary. Roger has actually played more matches than most players during the whole year, (73- 5) so far and the year isn't over. Compare that to Roddick who is at (44- 16) ! Davydenko has played (56 - 24) so far and he's a guy who plays every week. Roger has only two matches less than Davydenko!

When Roger decides not to play, it's for a good reason. He's not lazy.

Roger Forever !
