E. De Villiers Travelled to Madrid, 90% probabilities to Host a Mixed Tournie in 2009

During the presentation of the Madrid Masters Series today in the Spanish Cpaital City, Ion Tiriac announced that our city has 90% of probabilities to host a 10-days ATP-WTA tournament in 2009.

Tiriac said that Etienne De Villiers travelled to Madrid 2 weeks ago to watch the construction of the future Madrid Tennis Centre "The Magic Box", with 3 courts with roof like the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.

Madrid's mayor, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón announced that we will host the tournie because we deserve it and is his promise so .... we will see!

Nadal presented the tournament and will try to defend his title of 2005 (def Ljubicic traling 2 sets down and a break down in the fith)

Will be 1 of 5 new mini Grand Slams? Is indoor tournament, clay, or hard?

Indian Wells and Miami should be others two.

For the others, I think the money's on Miami, Rome and Toronto/Montreal... As for the other one I don't know, maybe one of the women's locations? But the fifth would mean one of the seasons will have two of these big events which would be unfair... unless they make one on grass which I doubt will happen!

ATP wants 5 mini slams. Miami is almost one of them, if Indian Wells be the other, I think that 3 other will be one before Roland Garros, one before US Open and one before Masters Cup.

The big tournaments in present have priority to will be a mini slam, so Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg have priority over Madrid, I think so. But I'll love a mini slam in Madrid before Roland Garros.

1st. I don't think that WTA has a word about locations, WTA always go behind ATP.

2nd. Two of five mini slams should be Indian Wells (or a substitute) and Miami, so only one tournament before RG, US Open and Masters Cup. I think that grass never will be a big tournament before Wimbledon.

Yeah I don't think grass will happen for a while...

The problem with using both Indian Wells and Miami is that these new events are meant to be spaced out so more top players turn up, and really highlight the build up to each season's main event. So unless they reorganise the calendar that wouldn't be a good move.

Perhaps Cincy since there's a WTA tier IV in Cincy just 3 weeks before the ATP MS there

Re: E. De Villiers Travelled to Madrid, 90% probabilities to Host a Mixed Tournie in 2009

There is simply no room on the WTA's calendar for Madrid to have a mixed event in the fall. It would have to be in the spring, but there is no room on the ATP's calendar then. So unless tournaments get eliminated, it won't happen.
