Blake vs. Roddick: Who is the better player?

Who is the better player, iyo? I'm not talking about accomplishments, but who has the better all around game?

Re: Blake vs. Roddick: Who is the better player?

I'd say Blake has a better all around game--he's much faster, his forehand is just as good or better, and neither has a great backhand. Basically, the only thing that Roddick does better is serve (and he's mentally stronger).

But I'm not going to say anything because I don't want a certain Roddick fan to give me an infraction.

Me neither! But that's a good answer. Look who's beating Safin these days.

Re: Blake vs. Roddick: Who is the better player?

Blake has more overall weapons, Roddick has more reliable weapons. Ergo, one would have to say Roddick is better at his more limited game than Blake is at his comparatively versatile one.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Blake's more technically accomplished.

Re: Blake vs. Roddick: Who is the better player?

Roddick. Comparing their overall strengths, not head-to-head, which makes it a bit tough, but Roddick's serve and forehand (in his prime) were two devastating weapons. Just having those two puts him in an excellent position since he holds serve relatively easily and just needs a few good swings on the return game to win a set. Roddick is maybe not the more complete player, but doesn't need to be because of the weapons he has. In comparison, I don't think Blake's forehand matches up. His movement is clearly superior and his return probably better, though not exceptional - he has moments of brilliance and moments of crap (like the rest of his game, unfortunately). But I'd rely on neither of those to win a match.

I guess if you picked an unknown opponent on a random surface and asked which of these two I would back, I'd probably pick Roddick.

Re: Blake vs. Roddick: Who is the better player?

Blake's game is torn apart by any top player that is not playing at a sub-par level.

Roddick can beat good players when they play well.

Blake's game has nothing special at all and he can lose to mid-level players when he is playing well.

Roddick's serve can blow away a lot of good players say like Tommy Robredo just out the gate.

Re: Blake vs. Roddick: Who is the better player?

Blake has the better and more all around game (can hurt you in more ways than Roddick can) BUT the biggest difference between the two of them is that Roddick knows what his weapons are and uses them to great effect (his forehand used to be MASSIVE, and he really needs to find it again to compete for the biggies all the time) and Blake still seems unsure of how to use his weapons and what to do when he's getting outhit. Roddick tends to wait for the storm to calm while trying to match the power of his opponents from time to time. Blake is just dumb in this department and blasts away with his opponents and hits tons of errors. Blake might be the better player if we look at their all-around aspects but Roddick simply knows how to play the game of tennis a hell of a lot better than Blake so nod to Andy.

Re: Blake vs. Roddick: Who is the better player?

Blake easily imo

Think his main problem is mentally. If he can click up there then he is comfortably 2nd best on a hard court. Just a case of cutting out the bad patches of play, lapses on serve, closing out matches, exploiting opponent's weaknesses and a bit more of a fighting mentality.

Andy is more mentally accomplished, which sounds hysterical to say but its true.

But who's better, overall? Or can't you pick? I agree with you, btw; that's why I can't pick either.

Re: Blake vs. Roddick: Who is the better player?

Roddick has so much ability in his serve games, that his game is well-suited to crush lesser players.

But in the end, today's best would rather play Andy than James.
Fed, Nadal, Ljubo, Nalb. For them it's only a matter of playing decent to grab a couple of service breaks from Roddick.

James can hurt you 0-5 down, returning serve.
But he has many requirements in order to play his game, and is easily prone to a bad day.

Who is the better player?
James can beat the best. Andy can crush the worst.
Regardless, their ranking will always be similar.

One things for sure, they're both horrible talents who have taken their games to the limit. Their success lying in the quality of opponents they face.
