Has this ever happened before, the top 2 going out so early to unseeded players, one going out to a non top 100 player, this is just nothing we've ever seen before I think.

The last time the top two seeds were out before the QF was Wimbledon 2003.

Top seeded and World #2 Hewitt lost to Qualifier and World #203 Ivo Karlovic in the 1st Round

2nd seeded and World #1 Agassi lost to #48 Mark Philippoussis in the 4th Round

A Dimitrov/Fed final would also have two finalists outside of the top 15 which I think would be a record.

As for that FO - qualifier Safin could have reached the Semifinals, if he had only beaten Pioline. He would have had Corretja and then Moya.

Australian Open 2002 – the top 2 seeds Hewitt and Kuerten went out in the first round to Alberto Martin and Julien Boutter respectively. I’m not sure what their ranks were at the time.

In fact, none of the top 5 seeds made it to the 3rd round (#3 Agassi withdrew, whilst #4 Yevgeny Kafelnikov and #5 Sebastian Grosjean both lost in the 2nd round)

it actually is not THAT uncommon historically, it happened numerous times. But in the last 10 years or so with the big 4, yeah, it hasn't happened.

Glad to see it though, we need more depth in the game with youngster and veterans having more faith in their ability to win against the top dogs
