TOP STARS OF TENNIS.

TOP STARS OF TENNIS.

MSNBC.COM'S BUD COLLINS TABS HIS TOP 5 MEN.

Bud's preface

The assignment: Select the top five men's tennis players of all-time.

This is about as simple as picking the five most stunning mountains in the world.

Over the years, as the game has evolved, made new demands of professionalization, and spread farther across the planet, at least 25 players are genuine candidates for the quintessential quintet.

To my mind, greats of one era -- Big Bill Tilden, the paragon of the 1920s, for one -- would be greats in another, adapting to changes in conditions, equipment, and methods.

Although there are more very good players today than ever before, true greats are scarce, as they always have been.

So here are my five, in their order of appearance on the scene

@ Bud's Perface.

Bill Tilden
United States

Pancho Gonzalez
United States

Rod Laver
Australia

Bjorn Borg
Sweden

Pete Sampras
United States.

Re: TOP STARS OF TENNIS.

The massive outpouring of love Agassi received when he retired really got under your skin, didn't it angiel?

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Re: TOP STARS OF TENNIS.

Borg and Sampras were boring, they don't belong on that list. Where are Connors, McEnroe, Tarango?

I don't like hypocrites, but even worse are the ones who think it's OK to be an asshole as long as you are not hypocritical.

Re: TOP STARS OF TENNIS.

I'm not judging guys like Tilden and Budge, Gonzales, people before my lifetime. You'd have to have seen them live to assess them properly. Top 5 men in my lifespan both for actual play and anticipation of watching them- not in any particular order.

Connors
Borg
McEnroe
Lendl
Federer.

You got to be kidding. Did you die in 1990 and resurrect in 2002?
