Nice win, but still way too many shanks and UEs from Fed. Berdych will be his first real test.

Shame for Rubin not to win a set. Had 2SPs at *2-5 30-40 but Federer erased these with good serving. Coming to the net was effective as Rubin is not used to that.

Federer off the ground looks very vulnerable, not really changing directions well and making lots of unforced errors.

17 aces in three sets...

Fed was on the plus side for winners/UEs - 48-41. He played pretty good, IMO.

Federer's AO R2 Post-match interview

Did I just hear Fed say he got an "Easy Draw" - when asked about the next match with Thomas!?

He called him "an old guy"!? Then, he tried to pedal back on it, but it was AWKWARD at best.

Wow... I don't what that was, but I hope Thomas gives him a good ass whooping.

Get some new hearing aids, bro. We all just heard the same post-match interview, and you are completely wrong. Think before you post. Don't be so emotional.

Rubin looked great with a big FH and hitting early at times but that BH is quite iffy. Should've really won the 3rd Set being up a break and a Set Point on Fed's serve but kinda crumbled after that. Really needs to fix that BH because it seem to crumble under pressure. Off-match note, I think it would be interesting to see Rubin against Dimitrov, seeing with the hairstyle and beard, they both look so similar. [emoji38]

What else is new with US players.

No.

Federer was struggling physically after 1.5-2 sets. And he was getting outplayed by Rubin a good portion of this match.
Don't really see it that way. His FS dropped a bit, made a few errors and he got broken. He played way better than Kei did today - Kei was negative in winners/ue - he just played an opponent who had 30 more UEs than winners.

how many aces were involved? Kei still finished the match with fewer games lost. Chardy would have given Federer problems. His inside out FH was on fire for second set. Federer used his experience to get through, that's all. Don't tell me Federer's groundstrokes did as much damage as Kei did overall.

What else could you call it? Bye(quali), Bye (quali), Bye(Berdych).

Berdych used to really trouble Federer for a while there, won 4 of 7 matches and could have won 2 of the 3 he lost. But then he aged a bit, little slower and little less powerful, and a player four years older is easily straight-setting him again.

Re: Federer - "Easy Draw... old man..."!? WTH?

He called Berdych a veteran and said it isn't an easy draw for him.

So arrogant even at this stage. I wish RAFA drew federer for R3...
I caught a little bit of his match today, he shanked one ball really high and it landed inside, after this he won the rally and didnt apologise. He looked like he thought it's his right to win every rally and wont car to apologise, if I was a fan of player like this I would really start to question following him in the future.

These type of misunderstandings don't happen when Courier is rocking the mic

Re: Federer - "Easy Draw... old man..."!? WTH?

I just watched it again - and yeah, he called him an "old guy" and said that he "doesn't know if he's in the top 10 still..."... Then went on a "standard spiel".

But that derailment moment was so telling.

I hope Thomas watches this and gets some good motivation.

Nope. He called himself an old guy

He said "it's not an easy draw" then he said (referring to the match he just played): "Here's the youngster..." pointing at Rubin ".... and the old guy" then "now I've got another veteran, former top 10 player, or is he top 10 I'm not even sure"

Well the non top 200 basher lost as expected, even vs. a not match fit Federer, Fed's level momentarily dropped in the 2nd to make Rubin look better than he was, he soon got things back in order to finish in 3.
