When I initially started the live rankings I set a maximum limit to tournaments at 47, thinking there was no way in hell a player would have more than this in a 52-week cycle. Until now: meet Goncalo Oliveira, not just a tennis player, but a beyond-the-limit playing machine. Currently counting 39 Futures and 7 Qualifier tournaments, once the live rankings places his tournaments in a queue to decide a dropping and an incoming tournaments (46+2), it goes beyond this scope. With 46 tournaments played in the last 52 weeks, it is like the tennis racket is all he's got. Nobody comes close to this guy, Nedelko, Ti Chen, Giraldi Requena, Haenle and Santillan being at 38/52.
Where does he exactly play per week? Different countries? It seems, "fun" to really globetrot while playing, but it seems not feasible IMO. Also, what about the recovery time?
He stays in one area mostly from what I'm seeing. 4 weeks in Austria in a row then a few weeks of bouncing around in Europe then 3 in a row in Switzerland then 4 in a row in Spain and Portugal.
3 of the weeks he didn't play at least appear to have been due to injury as he retired in previous events. He played today of course, won a doubles match. His results really picked up the second half of last year, he's not defending much til July in singles, he may be about to shoot up the ranks a bit.
@emotion Interesting. I guess a Eurotrip makes much more sense I guess, but that means really watching on which tournaments will be available on a particular week and being seamless in jumping from one area to another. That's actually kind of a cool experiment for shortest distance. How many tournaments can you play within a year without being to complicated.
What is his game like? Is he a big server? If he's a grinder, how is his body not in pieces? Or is he like Davydenko who rarely practiced but just played all the time?
he is a lefty. mostly a grindr and yeah he practices a lot. trains very very hard at the tournaments. he used to appear at "la clase baja del tenis" on youtube
Had to bump this thread as I search the live rankings. Like, wow. He seems to play mostly on the "multi-Futures", but there seems to be a patch where he played consecutive challengers. I wonder now how the upcoming ITF changes will affect him.
I hadn't heard of him, but I'll be looking out for him now.
