SAMPRAS DEFEATS RODDICK TO LEAD TEAM BILLIE JEAN KING TO VICTORY AT ADVANTA WTT SMASH HITS
$350,000 Raised to Fight HIV and AIDS in Orange County and Around the World
Irvine, Calif. (September 14, 2006) --- Andy Roddick had a great run at the US Open last week but the stage belonged to Pete Sampras on Thursday night as Sampras defeated Roddick to lead Team Billie Jean King to a 15-10 win over Team Elton John in the 14th annual Advanta World TeamTennis Smash Hits at the Bren Center in Irvine, Calif.
More than $350,000 was raised from the annual event which is co-hosted by longtime friends Billie Jean King and Elton John. At a reception held earlier in the evening, more than $184,000 of that total was raised as King, John and the players participated in a live auction, with proceeds from the event benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the AIDS Services Foundation Orange County.
In two sets of men’s singles, Roddick’s powerful serve was not enough to overcome the impressive play of Sampras. After winning the first set of men’s singles 5-3, Sampras never looked back as he posted another 5-3 win in the second set to close out the evening.
Sampras also teamed with WTA Tour double standout Rennae Stubbs in mixed doubles for a 5-4 win over Roddick and Anna Kournikova. The early highlight of the evening was the energetic play of Elton John who teamed with Andy Roddick for a battle of the sexes win over Rennae Stubbs and Anna Kournikova. John ripped a forehand winner on set point to win the celebrity doubles match in overtime, 5-4.
