Corretja retires officially

Alex has decided to retire definitely and will announce his decision on friday or saturday in Santander during Davis cup tie where he will be as TV commentator and will receive a tribute too .

Unluckily in the last years Alex has been fighting against a serious eye problem and after two surgeries he hasn't been able to recover enough sight to play again .

He has only recovered the 50% of the sight of his lefty eye and Alex says : " it's enough to make a normal life but not to play tennis as a pro " . Corretja adds : " The doctor told me to try it and train , and though physically I have kept fit , the best for me is to give up because I haven't fully recovered the sight and also my tennis level is very far from what I would like "

Re: Corretja retires officially

It was always on the cards and I thought he was delaying the inevitable and it was good to see him around at the Aus Open as a commentator.

He made the most of his game and deserved to win a RG title and 1999 was his year to do it, but not everythin works the way it should.

Very well spoken guy and had a great career. He should be leading the ATP and not Mr Disney.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Good luck in the future Alex.

Although retirement was probably due anyway, it's sad to see him forced into retirement by a poor recovery.

He did have an excellent career and participated in some unforgettable matches.

Good luck in life to Alex. He does have a beautiful family.

It is a pity that one of the first images that comes to mind is the loss in USO against the puking Pete.

Re: Corretja retires officially

he was one of my favourite players, after goran of course.
Alex was great not only on clay but also on all other surfaces
it was a big victory against sampras in 2002, form 0:2 down, it was amazing

This reminds me of the retirement of Albert Costa not long ago...They are good friends.

What to believe in, it's impossible to say?
What to believe in when they change your name, wash your brain, play the game again, yeah, yeah, yeah...
