I remember back when I was younger I played the game Virtua Tennis which featured Tommy Haas. I always considered Tommy Haas the coolest player and then, finally seeing him in real life can confirm he is the coolest. I think most would speculate this is Haas last year on the tour so I figured I would start up an appreciation thread. The backhand, the forehand, the backwards cap. Gotta love Tommy!

I didn't know you had another DA ;)

Another 38 year old playing the AO, alongside Stepanek.
Will be missed, he certainly had a terrific on court presence. Federer will need to thank him for letting him off the hook during RG2009.

And Nishikori will fondly remember training sessions with Haas at IMG Academy during his early days.

A wonderful legend of the sport. Safe to say that he awakens the inner leng jai within me. I watched one of his AO matches on TV in 2002 in a hot afternoon (against Todd Martin I believe), and I remember writing a letter to him to say how much I liked him and I gave it to my sister to proofread and for her to send it to him. But I'm not sure if my sister actually sent it to him though because I never got a reply back

Just to show how long he's been around, here some of the former players he played against:

Mark Woodforde, now aged 51, in 1996 (Indianapolis).

Michael Stich (US Open 1996)

Thomas Muster (Miami 1997)

Guy Forget (can't remember)

Alberto Berasategui (Hamburg 1997)

Magnus Gustafsson (Rome 1997)

Jeff Tarango (Halle 1997)

Christian Ruud (Casper Ruud's father)

Petr Korda (Washington 1997)

Marcelo Rios (US Open 1997)

And less remembered players like Kuerten, Pioline, Rafter, Todd Martin, Hicham Arazi, Magnus Norman, Bruguera, Krajicek, Santoro, Kafelnikov, Boetsch, Chang, Sampras, Agassi, Stoltenberg, Philippoussis, Ferreira, Rosset, Magnus Larsson, Marc-Kevin Goellner, Courier, Carlos Costa, Raoux, Simmerink...i better put an "etc." here now.

At the same time, it's possible that he competes against teens like Alex de Minaur this year.

He's basically the bridge to a long extinct era...

OK, I will go with this and I will be serious.

Haas was one of the most 'complete' players. He could have played any shot ... tennis 101 if you wish. I love watching his matches.

Unfortunately, even that he was so brilliant his biggest problem was his head. Mental stuff. Another thing is his injuries. So much shit happened to him.

I thought at the time that he could have been #1 based on his skills.

Well, he didn't win any majors. He was more than capable to do it.

One of, if not the most beautiful 1HBH I've seen. Before Fed came, it was my fav 1HBH and one of my favourite players. One of the last remnants of a bygone era, a beautiful and exciting player to watch.

He had issues with temperament which I think good looking guys generally have. But he's the complete package, has it all, good looks ,beautiful attacking all court game, beautiful wife, just a class act all around.

By the way, it is worth mentioning that his shoulder must feel like something completely different than when he started out. I've had one shoulder surgery and it doesn't feel quite the same. God knows what his shoulder must feel like and it is not a surprise that injuries are recurring and that it would only be a matter of time before another occurred.

Just because his shoulder has 'healed', doesn't mean much. He must feel like he's playing with someone else's arm. He deserves an absolute tonne of credit.

Tommy Haas appreciation thread, ffs what is this monstrosity

Mug human being, overachiever and his body is made of glass. Great logic giving him a thread.

The Tommy GOATredo appreciation thread will be making an appearance soon...

I just thought it was only right to congratulate Tommy on operating a fine tournament in Indian Wells. I half expected him to give himself a bye to the final, but our lord and savior Tommy Haas was gracious enough to let the plebians battle it out for his pleasure. Looking forward to the Miami Open it looks like Tommy will be playing VESELY, Jiri. Lets go Tommy!
