Roddick Consults Sampras (Davis Cup 2006)

Roddick consults Sampras

Eurosport - Pippa Davis - 19/09/2006 17:25

US number one Andy Roddick has consulted former tennis great Pete Sampras on how to beat Russia ahead of their Davis Cup semi-final this week in Moscow.

The last time the two country's met in the latter rounds of the Davis Cup – in the 1995 final – Sampras won all three of his matches to lead the United States to a 3-2 victory.

“I've just asked him for some advice,” Roddick told reporters.

“We played an exhibition match last week (at the World Team Tennis tournament in California) and we just had a nice chat about the Davis Cup.

“I've never been to Moscow before and obviously I wanted to know what the stadium was like and what the atmosphere was,” added the US Open finalist.

“It wasn't a long conversation, just a small talk but I appreciated all the help I could get.”

With the tie being played on a slower clay surface, Russia are considered to be the hot favourites to reach their first final since winning their maiden Davis Cup title in 2002.

“Obviously we would like the court to be a little harder,” said US captain Patrick McEnroe.

“It's a new court so it has a lot of holes in it right now and it is a bit slow but I think it will get better in the next couple of days.”

McEnroe even considers his team to be underdogs.

“It has been a long time since our last match,” he said, referring to the first round tie between the countries in 1998 when the US beat Russia 3-2 in Stone Montain Georgia.

“Obviously, playing here in Moscow makes it difficult for us. It's a tougher surface for us and it probably makes us slight underdogs, but we have enough experience on our team and it's going to be a very close match,” he added.

Re: Roddick Consults Sampras (Davis Cup 2006)

I went to the last tie the United States played against Russia and talk about a different situation than they are now facing. All different players (except Safin), a different surface, and a different atmosphere. I wish I remembered more about when I went back in 1998, but it was neat to see Kafelnikov and a young Safin.

Andreev - Cilic - Dolgopolov - De Bakker - Djokovic - Gulbis - Haase - Hrbaty - J Johansson - Kucera - Kuznetsov - Russell - Simon - Sweeting - Thron

Everytime I watch that final I laugh. Safin did not hit one winner in a baseline rally, but had about 20 from passing shots. And yet Pete still kept coming in even though he was winning a high percentage of points from the baseline

I'm sure Pete would tell him to put some boots on because the Russians will make them play on a SWAMP that makes his serve looks like Dementieva

He was dazzled. I can't blame him for wanting to get closer to Marat.

I'm turning into J'torian.

Marat: Last question: what do you think of me? Dinara: You are my god! When you play, I love
to see you. When you lose, I am even sadder than when it is me. When you are wounded, I suffer.
When you speak to me, I drink your words. When you come to see me playing, I am with the angels.

Nuh, it's just Tarpi bluffing. It will be a cold day in hell when Dima is considered the "only hope" on clay with TWO RG semifinalists on the team.

It's just you don't want to have a lot of expectations, because when you start to have a lot of expectations you just end up losing in the third round to God knows who. ~Marat Safin, summarizing his career

I learned a new word during RG:

Sandbagging: "Roger is favorite, no?"

Re: Roddick Consults Sampras (Davis Cup 2006)

the americans have no idea how to play on clay, i am sure even if they send out myskina, kusnetzova, dementieva and safina, the russians will still win the tie.
