Auckland R1: Lu def Khachanov 4-6 7-6(5) 7-6(9) Saves 2 MP

Khachanov saved 4 match points.

Yoyo match, Khachanov looked like he would run away with a comfortable win at 6-4 *2-1 throughout the second he blew countless break points, was *5-4 in the tiebreak and lost three points in a row.

Throughout the third set Lu was the better player looked comfortable until *5-4 where he blew 2 match points then it looked like Khachanov will win the match but Lu proved to be the tougher player mentally.

Khachanov this year has lost 4 sets in total, all tie breakers.
Litotes and RetourGagnant like this.

Lu was choking like a maniac at the end. Lu served for the match in the third set at 5-4, hit a DF on his own MP, and then a DF on BP. Then in the tiebreak, when he lead 5-4 with the next two points on his serve, he immediately gave back the minibreak. Thankfully, on his six MP, he finally ended it with a FH winner.

Regardless of the choking, it was still a good win for Lu. He'll face Johnson in the second round.

He chok but at the same time was very clutch with 2 3 balls at the line.

True, he was only choking when he was about to win but was very clutch when Khachanov was getting close to victory.

Khachanov is still a headcase but he could be a dangerous floater at Melbourne.

Karen He is very talented and has a big game but I fear his mental strenght might keep him from becoming a top player. At the moment I think top 20 seems realstic.
