MTF Player of the Week 02.01.17 (Brisbane/Chennai/Doha)

This is a competition that was previously run by @Slasher1985 last year but ended early because of lack of help, however we will alternate this year to try to keep the contest going until eventually the MTF Player of the year is chosen in November.

Criteria to vote
Of the players in the poll above, you may vote for one. There is no set guideline on how to vote, as it is intended to get the views of any regular GM poster. Some common points used to base votes off include:
- player who played the best tennis
- player who showed greatest improvement
- player who had the best results

Weekly Competitions
Depending on the amount of tournaments a week, players will be chosen based on results and 12 players are put into the poll (in the case of a 3-tournament week, all the Semi-Finalists). Voting always stays open for 3 days.

Monthly
In a system that is yet to be decided (feel free to have your say) players will be chosen from each of the weeks of the month based purely off the results of the MTF polls. A new poll of 12 players will be made and there will be again 1 vote per member, until after 5 days of voting the results of the poll are logged into a table from which the year end standings will come. In this competition members will vote for the player who they think is the best player of that month using similar criteria across a longer time frame.

Player of the year
The MTF Player of the year will go to the one who has the most points accumulated from the Player of the Month polls, and will be announced along with the MTF Awards that will likely be held at the end of the year.

This weeks options:
Grigor Dimitrov: The winner in Brisbane, with notable victories over Thiem, Raonic and Nishikori
Kei Nishikori: Brisbane finalist, defeating Wawrinka in semis
Milos Raonic: Defeated Schwartzman and Nadal in Brisbane before losing to Dimitrov
Stan Wawrinka: Semi-Finalist in Brisbane defeating Troicki and Edmund
Roberto Bautista-Agut: Won Chennai, beating Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev: Made his first final in Chennai before losing to Bautista-Agut
Benoit Paire: Semi-Finals in Chennai
Dudi Sela: Beat Ramos-Vinolas to make Semis in Chennai
Novak Djokovic: Won Doha. Survived 5 Matchpoints against Verdasco before beating World #1 Murray in the Final
Andy Murray: Runner-up in Doha after beating Berdych
Fernando Verdasco: Came very close to beating world #2 Djokovic, having already upset Goffin and Karlovic
Tomas Berdych: Beat Tsonga to reach the semis in Doha, losing to Murray

It's understandable some people will just vote for their favourite player, but while you may give reasons for your vote you cannot directly try to influence another's vote.

As said, we are taking in suggestions on how to decide who makes it into the player of the month poll and how the points system will work over the year.

The poll is public.

Dimitrov easily wins this, won a title by beating 3 top 8 seeds.

Dimitrov obviously. So I'm tossing my vote to Medvedev in hopes that he can finish 2nd in the poll because IMO he's the clear runner up despite Djokovic beating Murray in his title

I think Dimitrov did great winning a title beating 3 top-10 players, but I think what Novak did this week, especially after the funk he's been in the last 6 months, was remarkable. More than the title itself, it was a very symbolic match, which could shape the rivalry for this year. He also did it without Boris for the first time in 3 years. Saving 5 MPs in the SF just adds to the achievement.

Novak obviously. By a huge margin. Not debatable at all.

Re: MTF Player of the Week 02.01.17 (Brisbane/Chennai/Doha)

I think it's very interesting that Grigor might take this one in a week in which both Novak and Andy are playing!

Rare occasion.

The main pluses for Dimitrov was that he was not the favourite to win by any stretch, and had not won a title since 2014 (4 lost finals in a row) and had a poor mid 2016 crisis. Beat the defending champion quite convincingly, and beat Nishikori (who was 3-0 against him to date). Definitely an improvement in his maturity.

Hope this runs through the whole year this time.

I'm gonna pick Dimitrov as well. Djokovic didn't achieve more than usual, while Grigor did something he didn't do in a long time, also beating 3 Top 10 players
