Could Kyrgios give Djokovic a run for his money at the AO?

In case the draw wants them to meet, it could be an interesting encounter.

Djokovic is obviously the greatest Australian Open player in the Open Era. Not even the excellent Murray has managed to beat him there. No one. (Speaking of peak-Djokovic, obviously.)

Now, apart from a red-hot Wawrinka, nobody can reach a level high enough to take 3 sets off him.

But what about Kyrgios? His serve is not only a monster when on, but also incredibly accurate. The jerky, sudden motion makes it hard to block, even though it's not even as hard to read as Tomic's. I would like to see his flat, accurate backhand catching Novak off-guard.

No doubt, fitness and footwork-wise, he is a joke compared to Djokovic, and most probably couldn't really go toe-to toe with him in a 4-5 setter. But if he serves amazing, I can see him causing some trouble for the best.

There are a lot of players who are more dangerous for Djokovic than Kyrgios.

IMO it's only if he serves the way he did at 2016 Marseille, and Djokovic iis subpar like in Doha SF. AO isn't the best place for Kyrgios to challenge Djokovic, really hard to hit through him.

Re: Could Kyrgios give Djokovic a run for his money at the AO?

Kyrgios have the game to win the AO without a doubt, but he's always uninterested and doing silly things out of the court.

For example, he played Hopman Cup with an injury sustained playing basketball in the offseason.

He'll probably give up in the first sign of adversity ad usual.

I think Kyrgios at his best could make it into a 4 or 5 set match. Unfortunately I can't see him actually beating Djokovic

Might give him a run onto on grass, but at the AO he'll struggle to take a set to a breaker. In general, but particularly at AO, Nole is just too focused and consistent for Kyrgios' peaks, troughs and NBA daydreams.

I doubt he can beat him. The game is more than just serving. Might take a set perhaps but serve aside he isn't that big.

Re: Could Kyrgios give Djokovic a run for his money at the AO?

I think he could push him far. I think at home with the crowd on his side and in the big occasion he may play better. but on the other hand so may djokovic. I think Kyrgios has ridiculous talent though and more than any of the other young players.

Re: Could Kyrgios give Djokovic a run for his money at the AO?

Could serve big but Djokovic will surely give fits on return -- not sure if he's able to hold on in a 5 hour tussle ala Wawrinka 2013 (that being said he had some tough tussles like that Paire one but even then he seems more "sane" at that time).
