The women go net more and volley better then men

I looked at the US OPEN final and its clear Roddick isn't all that great with low volleys. Roddick also just doesn't have that overall natural feel at the net. Its at the net where Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin Hardenne are the best volleyer in all of tennis. Tracy Austin is correct no man or woman volleys better then Amelie. She has so much instinct when she slices the ball and charges into the net no one can pass her. She also covers all sides of the net well and low volleys too. Both women have so much talent and natural feel for the ball.

I agree .

The years of the great volleyers are long gone now . Federer and Nadal are average volleyers and Roddick needs a lot of work .

that's only because women hit shitty passing shots compared to men so it's easier to put away the volley

Women's tennis is boring. I have no idea why they have to imitate the men's game.

I think Martina Navratilova is the best volleyer ever, men or women. Sampras is a good second.

Re: The women go net more and volley better then men

Women do not hit passing shots with extraordinary pace off of approach shots that land on the baseline. Through the summer hardcourt season, I saw countless players hit what would formerly be considered amazing passing shots from positions that 10 or 15 years ago, only people like Agassi or Rios would be able to hit. 10 years ago, a good FH within 12 inches of the baseline, 2 ft from the sideline that stayed low gave you an excellent change to hit an easy next volley. Not the case anymore. It's no wonder players are not going up to net as often and hence not improving their volleying games.

Federer's net play has slowly deteriorated as he has gone away from the S/V game and even throughout this year. His volleying during the summer hardcourt season was quite poor and that includes the US OPen. In fact, he has had very few really good volleying days this year. His volleying against Nadal in Roma was fanstastic, and his volleying during IW and Miami was pretty good as well. I thought one of his best volleying performances since he quit S/V'ing was against Safin in the 2005 AO SF classic. He volleyed extremely well in that one.

yeah, its not only the power, but the dipping spin that the guys hit their balls with...its very difficult to anticipate when the trajectory is so steep.

the ball gets to your shoe tips so fast, that you need to open the face of the racket in order for the ball to go over the net. but if you anticipate wrongly, you are a sitting duck for the next shot.

Amelie has the best volley on the womens game, but she does not volley better than Federer

A service notice for Pete..

I think women's tennis is so different from men's tennis that you can't directly compare them both. Women's tennis has a slower pace and less spin, so it's a lot more easier for net play. Men's tennis is faster than ever, and the players are still managing to have more time to rip that down-the-line (or crosscourt) passing shots and even accurate lobs. So yes of course, women volley more, but even now there are fewer serve-and-volleyers in both tennis games.

Chuck Norris does not go hunting, because the word "hunt" implies the possibility of failure. Chuck Norris goes KILLING.

women's tennis is a joke...end of story. It should be canned along with doubles tennis.

Do you have the 'points won/lost at the net' stat of Fed at USO? I think it must be around 50%. Lots of times I've seen him there it was either a passing or a low ball practically imposible to reach by any of the best volleyer in history.
IMO it wasnt mostly bad volleying but more of a mix of bad decisions approachig the net trying desperately to shorten points and good shots by the opponents. But you are right Federer's volley is not what used to be. I don't remember when did he exactly stop doing S/V. Was it before or after he started to dominate?

The women hit the ball pretty hard as well. I am sure the women hit the ball close to as hard as the men do.

Before his domination. I am not quite sure if there was a turning match or what, but he probably stopped s/ving after losing to Nalbandian again in USO 03.

Re: The women go net more and volley better then men

like most have said...The women dont go to the net facing 80-90 MPH top spun passing shots/returns down at their feet..
and that is with the game slowed down over the last few years.

just goes to show how awesome Sampras, Becker and Edberg were.. but they had serves to help them get an easier volley, and not many slice the ball and get in anymore.

masters of the low volley, fed's technique is so similiar to Pete's but the main reason to me why he doesnt do it is simply because he can dominate from the baseline, he can use a Serve + volley as a changeup tactic when he feels like it.
