Better one-handed backhand

Federer or Henin-Hardenne? I am a huge Roger fan, but I think Justine's one-handed backhand is superior. Sure Federer has improved his backhand, but Justine's backhand is so crisp and powerful. I think it's the best in the mens' or womens' game. Federer, Mauresmo, Gasquet trail Justine's.

Come on, Federer would blow Justine off the court with his backhand.

Re: Better one-handed backhand

Not a fair comparison - obviously any one in the men's game with a half-decent backhand would overwhelm Henin on her backhand, we can only discuss their merits relevant to their respective tours. Anyway they do different things, Henin's backhand is a much more explosive topspin shot reminiscent of Gasquet and Gaudio at their best on clay, the way they drive through the ball and strike clean winners. Federer is hitting a lot more backhand winners nowadays, but more through angle and change of pace than by sheer power.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Re: Better one-handed backhand

We are talking about the stroke production and it's effectiveness in their games on their respective tours. A completely fair comparison. It has always been a go to shot for Justine and unlike with Federer I have never seen it really breakdown on her which is a measure of her comfort with it. Conversely I think it has occasionally let Roger down because it was once a weakness. Still I think as a stroke his is as well produced as hers and I don't think she has quite as much feel - his ability to adjust to pace and keep the ball in play is exceptional. On offense hers may be better (mostly because of attitude not stroke production) but I give Federer the nod on defense.

Justine's, more beautiful. Roger's, more powerful (even discounting for gender differentials; also, he has far more variety on the back hand side).
One exception, Roger's backhand cc return, dipping low. A thing of beauty; spectators go "ohhhh" because they think it won't clear the net, and see how it justtttt does.

Re: Better one-handed backhand

No way to compare Men ad Women.

Only discuss ATP, the best single-backhand

Becker : mid-80s - mid-90s
Sampras : mid-90s - late-90s
Kuerten : early-2000s
Now : Federer

Re: Better one-handed backhand

Federer's backhand is pretty overrated. Yes his backhand return and passing shots are awesome, but thats because they're both short backswings. In rallys, Federer's backhand can be pretty poor. He struggles to generate his own pace on the backhand, and quite often frames them. He has a habit of hitting short and loopy backhands which have little penetration. This happens more often at the French and Aus Open though where the bounce is higher. I'm talking exclusively about his topspin backhand, as his slice is easily the best in the game. There are plenty of 1H players on tour who have a better backhand than Federer - Haas and Gasquet for example.

For me, Justine's backhand is more beautiful to watch. But for me, Roger gets my vote for the things he can do with it. (though he usually mishit on that side)

agreed. guys like gasquet, haas, pavel, calleri, ljubicic, and gaudio all have better topspin backhands than federer.
