Monfils quits Champion

Good idea or bad idea? I quite like Champion but it seems he wasn't improving much these last months.

Re: Monfils quits Champion

Hard to improve results when he has been injured.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Champion already made miracles by leading Monfils within top 30

True, I don't say I agree with this but I'm not surprised by these news.

You saying Monfils ego is too big and he didn't want to listen to Champion? For the record I think he is a good coach, but Monfils wouldn't be the easiest to work with.

Re: Monfils quits Champion

Even barring injury, Monfils has plateaued. He's lacking strategy, tactics and doesn't appear to have developed in on court nous at all. May be he's thick, stubborn or just plain bored with his coach. Whatever, he has talent, but IMO not enough to go much higher.

It seems that whatever Champion would say, Monfils wouldn't do it in match. Not that they don't like each other. But I saw Champion puzzled at what was going on court most of the time I caught Monfils on tv.

Good move! Is Benabiles free? Has he hired a new coach yet?

Monfils well he hasn't found the medium that he needs to play at. I mean the guy is easily the fastest on tour, but does he need to play 10m behind the baseline and retrieve all the time, but he isn't going to be playing like Gonzalez either. That is something he has to work out, well he got very high without that much work, so now it's the next phase.

Re: Monfils quits Champion

The only thing Champion will be remembered as is loosing 6-0 6-0 6-0 to Sergi Bruguera at Roland Garros.

The guy should work on his volley, with his size he can pretty much cover the length of the net. Be more agressive at least. Hard work as you say.

Re: Monfils quits Champion

I agree with this. Jim Courier made the correct comment at the US OPEN about Gael. For a young man at 6 foot 4 he plays TOO DEFENSIVE! He needs to use his size and impose it more. Come to net, attack second serves. He needs a change he's still very young but hopefully the right coach can help him.
