Why Americans dont like Federer?

Roddick is popular, but Blake is more popular among fans or true tennis observers.
But I think it is because US Open spectators are jealous of Europeans because they got too used to watching one of their own winning US Open. I think they may just be jealous? Maybe Boris Becker was not popular either, but I wasnt born, but that may be true too. Steffi wasnt too popular either.

Re: Why Americans dont like Federer?

I had some brickbats thrown at my own thread last night so am hesitant to criticise others, but I'm pretty sure this topic has been raised many times over the past fortnight.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Please show me where it says that Americans hate Federer?? I strongly disagree with the sentiment that Americans hate Federer. Americans have been lucky to have many wonderful past champions in the game of tennis. Americans are also very patriotic and believe in supporting their own.........as is the case in every other country in the world. Lastly, the issue of Roger's unpopularity, in the US, has a lot to do with the ATP's LACK of committment to marketing tennis to the US Market. As a whole, the ATP hasn't been doing a very good job in promoting the game of tennis. The ATP board hired a new executive to try and bridge that gap. However, as of right now, I, and many others, think a serious mistake was made in that appointment. Furthermore, I can even make a solid case for the fact that I do not think the ATP is doing enough to promote Andy and James.

Re: Why Americans dont like Federer?

I don't think it's true that Americans in general don't like Federer. And if some of them don't I don't think it's because he's not American. My favorite players are Spanish and Russian and Cypriot. I don't even like the top American players.

Realize that the US Open crowd aren't avid followers of tennis--they are there only because the Open is a big annual NYC sports event. Many know Federer by now from the press, but he's still a foreigner. If you read my report in the US Open forum, I note that the major faces are surburban families.

The more knowing followers of tennis are the dots in between, and do root for Feds.

Re: Why Americans dont like Federer?

I'm American and I'm a huge fan of Roger's game. McEnroe practically worships him...what are you talking about?

If you mean the way the crowd was acting during the Blake match it was because James is a popular American with a feel-good story. Besides, I was at the Roger match when he played Spadea and he had HUGE crowd support. People were doing the wave before he came out and chanting, "Roger! Roger! Roger!!!" And he was playing an American!! Americans in general do respect his game.

Rooting for: Roddick | Federer | Blake| Fish | Bryans | Gasquet | Querrey | Baghdatis | Verdasco | Kimmy
Missing: Andre | Safin | Women's tennis

I completely agree with this. I have never liked a player just because they are american, in fact I too do not like any top American players. My favorite players are: Federer and Safin. I also respect: Nadal, Baghdatis and Nalbandian. I was also a fan of Steffi Graf and Monica Seles. I can't remember the last American player I was interested in. I think hard core tennis fans like who they like and it doesn't matter where they are from.

I also DO NOT like Roddick!!!

Re: Why Americans dont like Federer?

Ummm, are you on some kind of crusade to set a record for number of threads in one day?

For starters, Federer is extremely popular amongst US tennis fans. Just because they don't root for him when he plays Blake or Roddick doesn't mean he's not popular. Did you watch last year's final? They rooted for Agassi, of course, but were very supportive of Roger in victory.

Becker was extremely popular here as well. Graf became popular later in her career. She didn't have a very charasmatic personality, and was beating everyone to a pulp in the early part of her career, so that may have combined to make people a little less likely to cheer for her.

Re: Why Americans dont like Federer?

The US media just began really taking about him last year, so people dont know him all to well yet.

People respect him very very much, and to say that Americans dont like hi is not an accurate statement.

Were you there when the Americans were chanting against Federer? What #1 on the list, you would have been silenced by the chanting. I am not American and I hope Federer can win US Open.

The Americans were not chanting against Roger. The J-Block was chanting against Roger. The Americans cheered for Blake because he is the American, but they were also appreciative of Roger.

I think a good match to consider is the 05 US Open final. Agassi was the crowd favorite, but at no time was there chanting against Roger. The crowd cheered heartily for him when he won. Don't judge Roger's likeability by last night's crowd. The J-Block was in the house.

I loved the crowd during Agassi's matches. It was electric and simply amazing. But, as Steve Tignor's blog said, today, "His J-block, which took the glamour factor in the building down about 10 notches, helped mainly by irritating Federer."

The J-Block did the same thing to Nadal, last year US Open, and it was more than obvious they got to him.

That is true and I hate it. I mean, what's with that. Blake is so mature being the older of the two. I am glad he showed class at the end of the match.

Yeah, it's real classy to pay for a bunch of your friends to show up at your matches and act like arse clowns.
