Could Nadal Dominate The Australian Open Like He Has The French?

I know the Australian Open is still several months away though I thought it would be quite interesting to see whether Nadal would be almost as, if not as much, dominate over the other players playing at the slow hardcourt Australian Open Grand Slam as he would be at the French..

Just how much faster is the Australian Open compared to the French Open and would you give Nadal the edge in this Grand Slam over Federer?

BTW, Isn't the Tennis Masters Event at the end of the year meant to have a similar surface to the Australian Open which could also favour Nadal? Nadal could stand to earn many more points by the conclusion of January 07'.

Thanks.

Probably not.

I don't like hypocrites, but even worse are the ones who think it's OK to be an asshole as long as you are not hypocritical.

Re: Could Nadal Dominate The Australian Open Like He Has The French?

I don't think he'll dominate, but I'm convinced he'll win at least 2 Australian Open titles in his career. I think that Federer and Nadal's best rivalry will be on rebound ace at the Australian Open. I think Federer's always going to have the edge at Wimbledon and the US Open, while Nadal will be the main man at the French Open, so Australia is the best chance. Don't forget that Rafa isn't indestructable just yet though, as he lost to an ageng Carlos Moya in Miami, which is the slowest hardcourt on tour.

Cinci and the US Open have been dismal faliures for Nadal. I hope that he improves on hard surfaces or else.

We need to wait for AO'06. We never saw the real Nadal there and you need way more than ability to play well in the australian open. You need to be in shape in the first month of the season. And that's not easy. Can Nadal do it? We don't know, because top-player Nadal never played there.

I think the makings are there for Rafa to clean up down under. They are just the kind of conditions that Rafa likes. A nice high bounce to add to the difficulty of the topspin he puts on balls, a slower ball to give make the most of his superior defense.

I actually think that Marat's game is uniquely suited to down under as well. I don't know how a match between Marat and Rafa would go, but I'd LOVE to find out.

Re: Could Nadal Dominate The Australian Open Like He Has The French?

First off, its true that the slow speed and high bouncing balls of the Aussie Open benefits Nadal. However there are other factors at play which speaks against him dominating:

1) The massive spin Nadal employs won't have the same effect on Rebound Ace that it does on clay.

2) You cannot slide on hardcourts. The sliding aspect of clay DOES make a difference. Some players (mainly american) really hates it, while players who've grown up on the stuff loves it.

3) There are loads of the top players that feel competitive on rebound ace, while only a couple of handfuls of spanish and south-american players feel truly competitive at RG (expect Federer). Nadal dominates those players.

He might have to win it first.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".
