Does Safin really WANT it? Opinions please

I can't figure Safin out (big surprise! ), but seriously I would like to get opinions on how serious you think Safin is about tennis right now. He could of definitely beat Haas today and he did not seem tired to me. I am just not sure he is "hungry" enough.

We all know how he went on a 1-2 year party spree after winning the 2000 US Open. And I know he has had injuries over the past couple years but do you think he is just "going through the motions" or really wants to be back on top?

He is one of the most talented, naturally gifted players and is so great to watch. Such variety of shots! Not the boom, boom tennis that gets so boring. I want him back!!!

Fan of: Federer and Safin. Respect: Nadal, Baghdatis, Nalbandian

He lost in a tight 5 setter - if he wasn't hungry he could have blown it off in half the time.

He wanted it and he knows he was close to it and he didn't quite execute when he needed to.

It was a good sign that Marat was fighting so hard. It gives me hope for AO.

I have great hopes for him in AO and the 2007 season too. I just hope his recent losses don't affect his confidence.

He can't figure himself out; why should anyone else be expected to? Yes, welcome and please join us. To answer the question, I think he wants it. He has a million ways of thinking himself into a state of self-doubt, but he wants it.

I think after this USO he will actually have more confidence, I dont think he was expecting to do this well.

Re: Does Safin really WANT it? Opinions please

I think he wants it, but his personality/routine/mindset/injuries make it difficult to come up with his best stuff when he wants.

Andreev - Cilic - Dolgopolov - De Bakker - Djokovic - Gulbis - Haase - Hrbaty - J Johansson - Kucera - Kuznetsov - Russell - Simon - Sweeting - Thron

So far all of your observations are making me feel better.

Off to watch Roddick/Hewitt.

he really does want it
but there's a difference between wanting it
and working hard to get it.
i know...

anyway, optimists as we are for over 6 years for marat...
ONTO THE INDOOR COURTS!!!!!!!!!!

Marat: Last question: what do you think of me? Dinara: You are my god! When you play, I love
to see you. When you lose, I am even sadder than when it is me. When you are wounded, I suffer.
When you speak to me, I drink your words. When you come to see me playing, I am with the angels.

Re: Does Safin really WANT it? Opinions please

I think Safin really wants it.. I watched his match against haas last night and it finished around 2:30 in the morning here. He didn't play terribly in the match. I honestly think he played well, just unlucky on the crucial points but generally he played well... I hope he will have a good indoor court season! no more points to defend so the only place to go is up!

Oh he's definitely hungry, but he will forever be an OAF and we all have to sit through his OAF phases .

Don't let anyone tell you that you should have achieved more. You have achieved what you have achieved. Nobody can take that away and you have a clear conscience.
- Marat Safin

I'm not sue when Safin said this. but the fact that he said says alot of what he thinks about himself. IMO, he is saying this to try to take of the pressure of his "underachiever" label.
