Blake, Roddick to lead U.S. in Davis Cup semis

Blake, Roddick to lead U.S. in Davis Cup semis
By Simon Cambers

NEW YORK, Sept 5 (Reuters) - James Blake and Andy Roddick will lead the United States in their Davis Cup semi-final against Russia in Moscow later this month.

World number seven Blake and Roddick, ranked 10th, will be joined by brothers Bob and Mike Bryan for the Sept. 22-24 clash as the U.S. continue their bid to win the Davis Cup for the first time since 1995.

U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe said Ryan Sweeting and Nikita Kryvonos would join the squad as practice partners.

The match will be played on clay and McEnroe said it was a tough assignment for the U.S, with Nikolay Davydenko, Marat Safin and Mikhail Youzhny all likely to line up against them.

"The Russians are obviously extremely tough and are doing very well here," McEnroe told reporters at a news conference at the U.S. Open.

The match will be played on clay at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, the venue where Pete Sampras won all three of his matches as the U.S beat Russia 3-2 in the 1995 final.

NOT UNBEATABLE

Although the surface will not suit Roddick and Blake, who prefer faster courts, McEnroe said the Russians were not unbeatable.

"We've heard it is going to be nice and slow, nice and heavy but we've been there before, last year against Belgium and a couple of years ago in (the final in) Spain.

"I wouldn't say clay was their best surface. It's a surface they have had good results on but I think they have picked the surface against us rather than for them."

Safin, who is likely to play singles together with Davydenko, said Russia still wanted to avenge their 1995 defeat.

"It was a huge mistake by the Russians," Safin said.

"With all due respect to the players, to (Andrei) Chesnokov and (Yevgeny) Kafelnikov, they should have won, especially on clay.

"Playing against Sampras and (Jim) Courier, we should have won, that's for sure. Somehow, it slipped away.

"So, right now, it's a big match for us. I think we're going to win. We hope, we believe we're going to win the Davis Cup this year.

"We are going pretty strong, you know, coming to this match. We are going to practice hard, try to be in the final. This will be our second trophy, and I think we are very close to it."

And that worked out so well for us.

Thanks for posting. I'm just a little snarky tonight.

i don't think "lead" is the right word.

perhaps "lose" would be more accurate?

Don't worry Jim, it's a big country, they'll find their way back to it from Moscow somehow.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Ah, but Russia's also a big country. Roddick and Blake could wander into Siberia and never be heard from again. Good catch on the transitivity.

Only if they somehow pull off the win and an irate Tarpischev pulls some of those strings of his in Russian business circles.
