Christophe Rochus likely to retire soon (UPDATE --> Chris won't quit)

source: Radio 1 (Belgium)

"Christophe Rochus said after his loss yesterday evening against Frenchman Gicquel that he's totally fed up with tennis. He considers to end his carreer after this season. Christophe Rochus has been a pro for nine years long, is ranked in the top-70, but he told us that he can no longer handle the competition stress and the routine. The money is the only thing left that can motivate him at this point. Thus, exit Christophe Rochus"

I knew he didn't like his job as much as the other players, but this still comes as a surprise to me.

2006 - Final Rotterdam

Re: Christophe Rochus likely to retire soon!

Oh that's too bad. I don't blame him though. I think being a pro tennis player would be a pain

Re: Christophe Rochus likely to retire soon!

He's having a very poor go of it lately, so it's not entirely surprising. I'd still hate to see him go, though.

Re: Christophe Rochus likely to retire soon!

Is that the whole story?

Or is part of it that he's completely overshadowed by his much better looking, much better tennis player brother, who is a legend - Olivier Rochus?

Christophe has never had the same success and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a certain amount of pique about that.

On Walloon tv (La2), they said that Christophe plans on teaching tennis to kids in some academy.

Re: Christophe Rochus likely to retire soon!

Its a shame that people like him turn pro and dont like it then retire coz theyre fed up when so many young people are working there butts off trying to turn pro. I sound like mom but hes setting a terrible example for other young players and he doesnt notice ow hard he worked to get there. e should just set him self realistic goals andif he doesnt then just takeit slowly and see what happens

Nadal~Federer~Baghdatis~Tursonov

"He has no idea what he is writing anymore or who he is writing to. He just puts “lol” and moves on to the next window. The girl is probably telling him that her kittens died and he just says, “lol.” "Tursunov on Monfils

What are you talking about!?! Christophe has been a pro for nine and has been grinding hiself as a journey man for most of those years! I would say he's working his butt off, has been working his butt off for almost a decade, more even since he's been playing this sport since his childohood. If anything some of those "young people" should be looking up to him as an example of hard work and dedication. Yes he hasn't won a title but he must of loved this sport immensely to continue doing it for nine years. And If he wants to retire after almost 9 hard years of practicing, playing, traveling, and not getting to see his family, then I wish him all the best because he certainly deserves a break and all the happiness in the world.

I want to have my evil way with Tommy Robredo

Re: Christophe Rochus likely to retire soon!

That's too bad, but pretty much understandable considering his recent results. He had a very good year in 2005 and since he's not being able to repeat the success he's had last season, must've added to the frustration and all.

I quite liked his tennis - especially his Hamburg campaign where he hit dropshots all the way to the SF

Best of luck to him after pro tennis.

but did you see Ollie and Kim play mixed doubles at Wimbledon 2005?

They were great fun together and had a couple of great, really entertaining matches, before running into eventual champions Bhupathi and Pierce.
