Post-Match Analysis: Roddick vs Serra

What Happened?

There was no first-round upset over Andy Roddick this year. The 2003 U.S. Open champion was powerful with his serve and solid on his strokes, cruising to a straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3, victory over the unseeded Serra. Serra broke Roddick just once in the entire match. It continued a few weeks of great play for the American, who won his first title of the year at Cincinnati and also won the U.S. Open Series for the second year in a row.

The unseeded Serra was no match for the powerful serves of Roddick, whose serve reached a scorching 148 mph at one point. The match stayed on serve until the sixth game of the first set when Roddick seemed to hit his gear, breaking Serra for the first time and forcing him to hit shots long or into the net. It was a tough draw for Serra, the No. 44 player in the world to get Roddick, the No. 10 player, in the first round..

Turning Point

After Roddick broke Serra in the sixth game of the first set for a 4-2 lead, he then held his own serve and broke Serra again in the eighth game for the 6-2 set win. Roddick seemed to hit cruise control after that, including hitting two consecutive aces in the first game of the second set and pushed it to a 3-0 lead. Serra held his own through the first few games of the first set, but after losing the last three games of the first set and going down 0-3 to start the second, the Frenchman could not make a comeback.

Stat Of The Match

Roddick hit 25 winners and committed just nine unforced errors, a testament to his great placement of shots. He converted 70 percent of his first serves and had a 79 percent winning percentage on his first serve.

Serra committed 35 unforced errors and had just a 55 percent winning percentage on his first serve and just 30 percent on his second serve.

What's Next?

In the second round, Roddick will face either Kristian Pless of Denmark or Alberto Martin of Spain, both of whom are unseeded, as he continues his quest to win his second US Open title and second Grand Slam.

This was Serra's second appearance at the Open, as he advanced to the second round last year. He did win his second career title on hard courts at Adelaide this year but was just no match for Roddick on these hard courts.

View From The Crowd

The crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium showed their love for the American Roddick all the way, from the time he was first introduced until he was announced as the winner of the match. Calls of "Let's Go Andy" came from all over the stadium and the applause was especially loud when Roddick hit any one of his ten aces or when Serra's final shot landed out, giving Roddick the game, set, match.
