Question Who's the Lowest Ranked Player To Win a Slam?

I know that it wouldn't be Safin if he won, because Goran was ranked around 125 when he won Wimbledon as a WC.

But is there anybody who was lower ranked than Goran?

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Interesting question Becca. I'm pretty sure it would be Goran who, as you say, was ranked too low for direct entry into Wimbledon in 2001, but I'm sure plenty of people will correct me if I'm wrong.

He was ranked in the 60's, no? In which case he'd be beat by Goran, and even Safin if he wins.

I can't think of any player ranked lower than Goran.

I figured that it was Goran. I just got thinking about it because Safin, if he wins, would have to be up there.

It was supposed to be a dee, thought provoking question or anything

I lack direction.

Yep, Goran was ranked 125 on the last rankings before he won Wimbledon 2001.

I can't find the rankings directly prior to the US Open in 1990, but Pete Sampras was already 81 in the year end list in 1989, so my guess is he would have been higher than Safin is now by the time he won it.

Re: Who's the Lowest Ranked Player To Win a Slam?

Pete Sampras was seeded when he won the 1990 US Open (albeit a high seed like #12).

I would think Goran because he was a wild card. I think anyone with direct entry to a grand slam would have to be ranked higher.

The only question is whether a qualifier has ever won a grand slam.

How high was Boris Becker's ranking in 1985 before he won Wimbledon? I know he won unseeded and finished the year at no.6...but I'm not sure where his ranking was before the GS win.

The last Aussie who won in Oz was Mark Edmonson in 1976 and he was ranked 212 so Goran is second in the list.

Boris only just missed being seeded at Wimbledon in 1985. After he won Queen's I believe he was ranked somewhere in the region of 18 to 20. (Tim Mayotte was just above him and got the 16th seed, but they ended up in the same part of the draw anyway.)
