Hats Off to Andre Agassi

After losing the first two sets in the closest possible way, he wouldn't go down without a fight. Against an opponent almost ten years younger, Andre produced an admirable performance.

He made Safin beat him, and Safin was up to the challenge. Congratulations Marat -- it is good to see you back.

This could be Andre's last Australian Open. So amid the rejoicing about ESPN's misfortune, I want to pay tribute to him.

Re: Hats Off to Andre Agassi

His a great champion, best player ever on rebound ace and a terrific addition to tennis

hopefully he will be back although the symbolic kisses to the crowd even though he lost could mean he wont be returning

Re: Hats Off to Andre Agassi

He really deserves lots of respects. All tributes to him. I hope the media/reporters won't again throw all those questions of his stakes vs "younger players" after today. If Andrea hadn't also played a fantastic match, we probably won't see that hell of a match from Safin too. It's relative.

Andre, there's no better way to lose than to lose after being unbeaten for 26 consecutive matches over a period of 5 years, taking such a powerful player like Marat to two extremely close tie-breaks, 5 sets, of which one was won by you with the score 6-1.

Anastasia Myskina, Marat Safin thank you.

Comment for the above photo: that's what I call gracious in defeat! Andre looks as if he is happy that Marat won! I love Andre too now.

A great effort by Andre. Of course, I'm delighted for Marat (I had predicted Agassi would beat him easily). Sounds like this match was played @ a very high level by both players. That's the way it should be in a Grand Slam.

Re: Hats Off to Andre Agassi

This was the best match of the tournament, maybe even the best match in some years now and both players could walk off the court with their heads up high. Agassi gave it his all, but it just wasn't enough today, Marat was too determined I guess. In the fifth set I honestly had given up on Marat, but he bounced back and proved me wrong.

Well done Andre!!

Re: Hats Off to Andre Agassi

I completely agree with your sentiments. Andre is one of the only players I could think of that would fight back after losing two extremely close sets, in which he had set points on his serve in both, and take it to a 5th, maintaining a great level throughout. He really did make Safin earn the win, fighting till the end.
I am so sad about the loss though, it looks Andre may not be returning. He did his customary bow to all four sides after the match, which he doesnt normally do in defeat. In his press conference when asked about it he said something like "i wanted to tahnk the crowd for supporting me over all these years because you never know when it'll be your last year"

The look on his face said it all, but I'm interested in reading the interview

Re: Hats Off to Andre Agassi

Props to Andre.

Even though I've never liked the guy, you have to admire the player he became over the past 5 years.

Despite hating ESPN's coverage, and constant speak of Andre going for his 5th Aussie... I secretly wanted Andre to win his 5th, and go out as a winner.

Or, at least kick the Duck's ass again in the SF... which I'm very confident he would have done if they played.
