I remember hearing something like that but the commentator (don't know if it's the same one) said this just based on the fact that Verkerk has such a huge serve and even added that he hadn't played much on grass.
Yes, that is true and the best thing was after RG, he went off and played a league match.

Dimwit Pat McEnroe couldn't admit that Federer was born with physical agility, strength and very long arms.
He desperately lived through Federer, which fed his ego as a commentator.
Pat promoted his success as the "result of genius and anticipation".
It's always "no one is well loved like Federer". Poor McEnroe.
From another thread:

heya said:
Talent player still wins with average power, poor fitness and little flexibility
heya said:
Talent is confused for flashy shotmaking/agility and long arm reach.
Heya, since you keep bringing on these theories about tennis talent and about Federer not being talented but a long armed/power freak of nature, I suppose you are invited to elaborate this more?

The gravity comment is elementary physics, but acceleration related topics are usually not
Maybe your education was done elsewhere where elementary physics is actually more advanced
I am just talking about high school physics in Greece, i guess it is similar elsewhere. The fact that a particle cannot accelerate without the influence of an external force looks pretty elementary. After the racquet contact, the only force on the ball is its own weight.

i'll be a smart-ass for a sec:
Balls with top spin have a Magnus force acting on them, which is why they drop faster. Perhaps this force might also accellerate the ball horizontally, although i'm not too sure.

Hmmm... I am pretty sure that the Magnus effect creates a vertical force.

I went to a very academically poor high school, and Newton's laws were covered. I call it elementary.

Do you know which commentator said that? I want to give him/her proper credit. ;)

Re: Commentary at its best

I think you could regret you don't have Polish TV :p I used to note the texts down. None from this year's Wimbledon, but for example... 2004.

- Philippoussis in front of the task of defending the Kangaroos (about Aussies).

- Ladies and gentlemen, if the notes that I've taken are true...

- The American had the good luck that he hit the line.
- Yes, he would have had bad luck in case he missed.

- The American flag is flowing... next to it the Biritish flag is bravely flowing...
- Yeah, I wonder how's at Henman's...

- He kills him with the sight. Fortunately only with the sight.

- Maybe we should mention Coria won in Sopot?
- I think we should mention he was in QF at US Open.
- US Open is not in Poland.

- We will be the witnesses of many rallies. (about Coria playing with someone)
- As for now, we were witnesses of the flight of a pigeon.

- The bird, that you can see out there dear spectators, is a TV camera ( :tape: )

etc. etc. :D If you want I can post more

Ancic-Wawrinka match, camera pans to audience members wearing red shirts with white crosses.

Bill Macatee: "Quite a lot of support for Croatian players here, with the distinctive red and white shirts they all wear."
John McEnroe :cuckoo: Sets him straight on the design of the Swiss flag.

Worse, during the warmup, they cut to fans wearing the actual Croatian flag on their shirts and Bill had commented on it.
I heard that one! McEnroe sounded quite embarrassed for him. Wasn't the commentator Bill Threlfall though? Anyway, whoever it was he's going gaga...

Re: Commentary at its best

:) On demand I'll put more pearls from mouths of Polish commentators, and I really don't even concentrate of mixing nationalities or calling someone "hopeless on hard" for the sake of being an Argentine or repeating any other cliche because it happens all the time. Countries like Czechoslovakia, USSR, Yugoslavia still exist for our commentators and it's not even funny.

- The exuberant characters of the linesmen should be severly tempered right now.

- Krajicek is higher than his opponent... exactly 10 kilo higher.

- Knock knock knocking on Schuettler's head...

- Beautiful shot of beautiful Dominique (Van Roost)

- Beaten up for the third time, he stands up again and bites (Hewitt)

- Putting it in not very decent way, he is like a tick (Hewitt again)

- No, dearest mister Andre, you are not allowed to play like this! Andrzej (= Andrew in Polish) what the hell are you doing???? (unbiased).

- (one commentator to the second one) Karol, will you let me calling you Carlos since now?

- Birds flew over the court. They say hello to the tennis players (Agassi - El Aynaoui in Miami)

(more to come if wanted)

Re: Commentary at its best

I used to do it with a passion and trust me, sometimes I was rotfling too much to note down the best ones. Sometimes I couldn't have done this when my father shouted to put the volume mute. I guess you want more - to come in a minute :p

Brad Gilbert on whenever fed is returning: "I have this feeling creeping over my shoulder that federer is gonna break now"

(After opponent holds) "Maybe its just from that 5 setter back in (insert 5 set match he played in insert year here)" :retard:

Re: Commentary at its best

* Match of Pioline - Hrbaty (Monte Carlo final). Commented by Bohdan Tomaszewski (around 85 y.o. ... he often comments with his son ... and during his life he was not only the tennis commentator). During the games the senior was telling the long story about Wojciech Fibak (best ATP player from Poland ever) and finally... out of the sudden, he shouts: "Golden years of Polish pole vault!!! Young Bubka comes to Kozakiewicz and asks..." (eww here I started to :haha: and missed what Bubka asked)

- As we can see on the suggestive replay served us by the technical guy...

- As for now, we can say that the Russian player has very white teeth (about Dementieva and her unforced errors)

- The mature body of Scott Draper moved on

- Dangerous sight.... "I won Rome" (Felix Mantilla)

- Temporary certificates of storminess of Kuerten

- She is getting prepared to it like a stork to the frog (Hantuchova)

- (about Calleri) Wow, I think he likes eating a lot of pasta and red wine!

Oh, then it probably was. I don't actually know most of the commentators yet, and during the match only his first name was given, so I googled "Bill tennis commentator" and a Wikipedia entry on Macatee came up. Thanks for the correction.
