Re: Commentary at its finest

Couple of nice ones in the mixed doubles match Vesnina/Paes vs Hanley/Kudryavtseva:

Goodall: Is Vesnina wearing black knickers under her skirt?
Wade: All the women are wearing them. Serena is wearing bright pink ones for example.
Goodall: Shouldn't they be white?
Wade: It's funny... all the male commentators I sit next to seem to be focusing on this.
Goodall: I'm just all about keeping the rules and understanding them

-

Wade: Yeah, Hanley left a little bit too early for that one. (crossing)
Goodall: Yeah, the women don't have that problem given they are always late.
Wade: See... I...
Goodall: Am I allowed to say that, is that going too far?
Wade: See, I was too late to think of something to counter your line.
Goodall: I'm just drawing from experience with my girlfriend, that's all.

-

Goodall: Seems Kudryavtseva isn't having the best of days. In mixed there's always this added pressure when the female partner isn't playing well, it puts you in an uncomfortable position and you've got to try and do more and try to lift your partner up again.
Wade: Yeah, I always say mixed is for the men to lose and for the women to win.
*Kudryavtseva doublefaults*
Goodall: Not much Hanley can do there.
Wade: It's especially true whenever the women doublefault. Hanley it's all your fault, now why didn't you help?
Goodall:

Djokovic
Davydenko, Baghdatis, Tipsarevic, Wawrinka, Gulbis, Troicki, Kyrgios
Sharapova, Jankovic, Zvonareva, Kirilenko, Vesnina, Dokic, Bacsinszky, Jovanovski, Pironkova

Too much arse kissing and purring from Koenig. Goodall was better years ago, when I first heard him around 2003/2004, Koenig is a bad influence on him. Still, he's the better of the two.

Re: Commentary at its finest

Yeah, Goodall is much better when he is teamed up with somebody who will try to analyze a bit more and say something new. Say a Lindsay Daveport for example. He will engage in these discussions then. With Koenig all you can do is go along with him saying the same things over and over and over and over and over again. That and him going all overboard in excitment. He should team up with Bradman, they deserve each other That way Bradman can cover the normal winners (BRILLANT, AMAZING, WOW) and Koenig the amazing ones (WORLD CLASS, OHHHHHH RODDICKULOUS (ok, he's not saying that one ever again)).

Davydenko, Baghdatis, Tipsarevic, Wawrinka, Gulbis, Troicki, Kyrgios

Re: Commentary at its finest

This is from 22 years ago but you've got to see this! John Newcombe was obviously always a very bad commentator unless Sampras' game was a whole lot different back then.

That was Mark Petchey who said that, by the way.

That's Fred Stolle, I think. And he still commentates like that - he's useless.

Re: Commentary at its finest

Andrew Castle: "I suppose being ranked 51st in the world now John, is a bit like being 15 or 20, 10 or 15 years ago"

John Lloyd: "I would say so, that's exactly right"

10 years ago tomorrow Ranked 15: Pete Sampras, Ranked 20: Gustavo Kuerten.
10 years a week ago tomorrow Ranked 15: David Nalbandian, Ranked 20: Guillermo Canas

And '97 is even stronger.

A gem from the classic duo.

Bravo TV coverage is brutal. Gimelstob, some guy Pat O'Brien that I've never heard of before who just mistakenly called him Justin Timberlake, and Jon Wertheim giving us his "expertise"

I like gimelstob.. although the opining of Fed and his wife was a bit much. Pat O'Brien is a long time broadcaster..used to do Entertainment tonight.. I actually thought he had died tho lol.

Re: Commentary at its finest

NBC's Olympic tennis coverage is always painful because it's catered towards people who never watch tennis. Not casual tennis watchers like during the slams, but people who NEVER EVER watch tennis. People who like watching the Olympics and channel-surf for all sorts of different sports to watch, and never watch them again until the next Olympics comes around. The whole presentation and commentary to an avid tennis fan is like a master painter being forced to take a fingerpainting class with preschoolers.

But I like how NBC at least has separate channel dedicated to tennis this time and it's shown LIVE!

He's pretty much been off TV since getting fired from The Insider 4 years ago - just doing sports radio. His alcoholism is well known, especially those voice-mail messages...

Re: Commentary at its finest

Pat O'brien has been around for years, he used to host NBA On CBS and the US Open, the announcing is subpar but gotta expect that because as someone said its for the average Joe, the best bet is if you live in the US watch on nbc olympics site, it has courts centre, 1, 2, 14 and 18 ( for some reason 3 is actually court 14 and court 4 is actually 18)

Gimelstob "If the length of this match were a stock, you should short it."
Please stop trying to be clever, Justin. It never works.

Gimelstob: Federer missing a FH is like watching Halley's Comet, happens once every 76 years. Haber: I'm glad I was with you

Found this on twitter, didn't hear it myself.
