Adam's Wimbledon Qualifiers Report (Lots of photos now online!)

Lots of lovely pics, click here

I went to the Wimby qualies today, so I thought I'd give you a little (or maybe long) report about it

First match I went to was Dokic v Stevenson (anyone that suggests this is WTA and shouldn't be on here can piss off ). Dokic started really well, and was dominating the match. She was looking sound off both wings and striking the ball really well. It was windy and both were struggling with their serve slightly, but it looked like Dokic had it won. At a set and 5-4 up, serving for the match, she served 3 double faults in 4 points and got broken. The set went to a tie break, and Dokic took a 5-4 lead with 2 serves to come. She double faulted on both her service points, then Stevenson took the set point and Dokic tanked the 3rd set pretty badly

After that, the mens matches were beginning to start so I watched a bit of Kevin Kim v Jeremy Chardy. Kim is such an underrated player in my opinion, he really does have a nice game, very solid all round and very classy. Chardy wasn't overwhelmingly impressive, nothing about his game stood out as being a world class shot, and his tactical nous around the court left a lot to be desired. Kim should've won a lot more easily than 6-2 7-5, he served for the match at 5-3 in the 2nd. He was kind enough to let me have a photo with him after

Then I went and watched Scoville Jenkins v Michael Lammer. Jenkins was hugely impressive, probably the best performance I saw all day. He destroyed Lammer, serving superbly and firing winners from all parts of the court. I took my photo with him as well, he's pretty cool I liked him. Ilija Bozoljac was celebrating with Jenkins when he heard he won, and got offended I didn't ask him for a pic so I took one with him, then one with him and Scoville (Ilija gave me his email address, he wants me to email them to him ). He wants me to email them to him! I got talking with him for a bit, he was watching this other Serbian guy (Dusan Vemic, he looked like an absolute headcase). Ilija was thrilled when I started talking to him about Serbian tennis, and informed him of people on here that loved the Serbs (erm...Jess). Ilija is such a funny guy, he propelled himself into my favourite players list even before he played (and even more so after I'd seen him play, more later )

Then I went over to watch my beloved Irakli Labadze play Jeff Morrison. Who was there, but none other than the legendary Todd Martin I informed him I was a big fan, and got a photo with him too. Labadze was hilarious as always, after Morrison got a lucky netcord he muttered "fucking Americans" to himself He got hugely pissed off after he lost the first set, he was getting upset with pretty much everything, the noise, the aeroplanes overhead, the court, the balls etc. I thought he had no chance of coming back after losing the first set (his belly is still way too big for a professional tennis player ), so I left. Later on as I was watching another match I saw him walk past, so I asked him how he got on. Turns out he won! So I took a picture with him too and had a little chat with him. He's great, very friendly. It confirmed my liking for him.

I then decided to have a little 15 minute spell at various matches to check out some of the new talent coming through that I hadn't seen much of. Watched a bit of Roko Karanusic who looked solid if unspectacular. Can't see him ever reaching the top 20 though. Then went over and saw Julio Silva, he took my eye because he walked onto court wearing a Brazil football shirt He was getting a bit of a caning from George Bastl, but I kind of liked the look of him. I'm guessing he's more comfortable on slower surfaces, but it seemed like he had a sound baseline game. I'll look out for some of his results on clay.

Caught a bit of the all Aussie clash between Wayne Arthurs and Peter Luczak. It wasn't the best quality, but the first set was extremely exciting. Went to a tie break, and Arthurs double faulted on set point and it looked like it would never end. Arthurs finally took it 13-11 and the 2nd set was a bit of a formality. Funniest moment of the day was Arthurs hitting a huge bomb, absolutely whacked the ball boy on the shin, and he went flying back and fell over

Oh, as I was walking back to see Bozoljac start, I couldn't help but notice this mop of hair playing against Diego Hartfield (the guy who troubled Fed at RG). I discovered it was Pavel Snobel, and have come to the conclusion it is the most ridiculous hair in mens tennis. You can make your own mind up when I put the pics up

So I went back to see Ilija. He got off to a great start, breaking for a 2-0 lead. He's got an interesting game, double handed off both sides although sometimes changing to single handed on the forehand. His return of serve is sublime, though his groundstrokes are incredibly inconsistent, and when he gets frustrated (which judging by today is rather often ) he tries to smack winners from everywhere and usually misses by a mile. Heuberger broke straight back, though not without controversy. During the point, the women calling the t-line on the serve was moving about all over the place. Ilija was not best pleased, and had a major rant with the umpire - I videod it on my mobile it was great! In the following game, Ilija slipped and was flat out on the ground, writhing in pain for a while. It looked like he might not be able to continue, but the doctors did a good job, gave him a massage and some pills and it didn't seem to affect him for the rest of the match. The rest of the set went with serve, but Heuberger's steadiness shone through and he took it 7-5. Ilija kind of a had a brainfart after that, he got broken to go 3-0 down, but was still hugely entertaining. I've never heard anyone shout so much on a court in my life. He had another argument with the umpire when he was told he wasn't allowed to wear his light blue cap (all whites only ) so he stood up and threw the cap at the umpires chair. He must've had about 8 or 9 arguments with the umpire in total, much to my amusement. It actually got to the stage where Adrian Garcia (who was playing on the court next to him) called across "Hey, you're not the only one playing here you know". Bozoljac responded by kissing his finger and sticking it up at Garcia Despite his messing around, he's very passionate about his tennis, when Heuberger clinched the match, Ilija sat in his chair for 10 minutes, with his towel over his head, and I think he might've been crying. I wanted to wish him commiserations, but I thought he might kill the next person he spoke to so I trotted off home

The end.

P.s. Pics will be up tomorrow

Loved the report Adam!!!!

Enjoyed reading about Scoville. I saw him last year at the USO and was impressed too. But since then, it seems every time I see a post about him, people are saying that he doesn't have what it takes to make it. I'm really looking forward to seeing him again this year.

And he does seem like a sweet kid.
