Congratulations to Dmitry Tursunov on winning 2006 MTF Bandwagon Player of the Year

MTF Bandwagon Player of the Month

Yes, this is the wonderful MTF tradition for a player all of a sudden gains a legion of fans or have a over a very short period of time, through either a big win or a big performance in an event. The multitude of threads about the same player and the usually over a very short period of time proclaiming greatness or future greatness, to winning Slams without losing a game.

Once they have gained them, then when the results to wane usually in a very short period of time then they go to the status overrated or disappear just as quickly. Yes, there are true fans of these players and they know who they are for the most part.

If they do well on faster surfaces then clowns like GWH have a dig at their lack of claycourt skills, then if they do well on clay, they are derided as claycourt specialists, even if they do well on other surfaces.

An example of this was when Gasquet started at 15 and he qualified for Monte Carlo and won some matches, he had a lot of hype and some fans, then he was in the wilderness due to injuries, poor form etc, then he comes back in 2005 and he defeats Federer and then he is proclaimed as a messiah who is going to save French tennis and will be a multi GS winner on the strength of a beautiful backhand and defeating Federer.

This will be a competitive contest and besides the winners there will be some honourable mentions when the award has been close. Tursunov's effort was very special indeed, he got the Bandwagon award for his blog and not his tennis.

In contrast to Gasquet the winner of though the 2005 Bandwagon Player of the Year was Nadal, hasn't had the bad results as of yet recently, but once the form declines then the usual comments will come out in force.

Before the awards are given out, there are some honourable mentions like Fabrice Santoro for Jan/Feb for his excellent run at the Australian Open. Gilles Simon during the April/May run of the season did well in this regard, but these are the winners.

Baghdatis for his Australian Open run, Acasuso for winning Viña del Mar and Davis Cup debut, Tursunov because of an entertaining blog, Almagro showing some of his potential and winning Valencia as a qualifier and became an RG contender and Berdych for pushing Federer on grass and having a good RG result.

Wimbledon should bring up a few new candidates for the July award.

The winners of the Awards so far

Code:
2006 MTF Bandwagon PLayer of the Month

Jan-Feb Marcos Baghdatis
March Jose Acasuso
April Dmitry Tursunov
May Nicolas Almagro
June Tomas Berdych
July The word rivalry
August Richard Gasquet
September	Mikhail Youzhny
October Tomas Berdych
Nov/December	James Blake

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

The Bye is just a huge star and doesn't need a Bandwagon.

Nominations for July won't be too far away.

I assume they'll be in after Wimbledon, obviously. Any predictions?

Yes, of course and Slams will bring them in for sure and I wouldn't know who it could be.

Mainly cause I am more interested in the football.

Same here. I so much want Ghana (has a good chance) & Tunisia ( a very slim chance) to qualify for the next 16. I think Sweden has a very decent chance to qualify too. I am worried about Italy. We'll see.

Not so much really. Less than I would have expected. The bandwagon effect was stopped a little bit by the fact than many people just love to hate him

Troicki - Djokovic - Del Potro - Kyrgios - Berankis
Cibulkova - Robson - Kirilenko - Azarenka
Retired but always loving Ferrero - Ancic - Kiefer

Djokovic might have been a contender for one of the monthly awards from last year.

He has done well enough on limited results to get a good amount of loathing.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Re: MTF Bandwagon Player of the Month

Blake has already had his bandwagon parade last year mostly cause of his comeback.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

What time did his bandwagon peak? Was it around the USO, or before?
