Haven't laughed that much watching tennis in a long time. Hard not to be amused even though I don't like the result. That was, even by Querrey standards, an incredible collapse.
At 4-1 in the 1st set Querrey was 40-15 (close to double break) - he lost it
At 4-2 in the 1st set Querrey was 40-15 on his own serve - he lost it
4-3 instead of 6-1.
Since then it was basically over. Nadal's clutchness in these two games destroyed Querrey's mentality.
Unfortunately, It does not take much to destroy Querry's mentality. Pathetic by Querry after losing that 4-2 game, all Rafa had to do is keep the ball in play and just let Sam self destruct.
Nadal vs. Querrey
2006 Cincy Masters: 6-7(5) 6-2 6-3
2008 US Open: 6-2 5-7 7-6(2) 6-3
2008 Davis Cup (Clay): 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3 6-4
2016 Madrid Masters: 6-4 6-2
This match was definitely entertaining. Every short ball, I was like lets see how far out Sam can hit this one or how bad will the drop shot be this time. Usually when watching professional tennis players, I am used to them never ever missing a short ball. This felt like tennis I see at the park (hitting easy short balls 5+ feet out consistently that is).
Sam is so mentally fragile he had a 4-1 lead and blew it! He needed the first set sad that Sam did not win the set. Once nadal broke back I knew match was over.
Puh, was quite scared for a moment here. It was a bit like Anderson vs. Djokovic in Wimbledon. Insane servebotting and ballbashing from the best shotmaker in the game. He was obviously not gonna keep it up but I didn't expect such a spectacular meltdown. Nadal hates those matches where he gets no rhythm, especially here in the altitude.
