Top Ten All-Time Individual Rivalries in Sports (, June 16, 2006)
3.Chris Evert vs. Martina Navratilova: The women responsible for tennis' greatest rivalry met in 80 singles matches, with Navratilova winning the final 13 for a career 43-37 edge. They contested 14 Grand Slam finals, with Navratilova taking 10. The two were also good friends and even combined to win three doubles titles. This matchup provided a classic contrast of styles, with Evert pounding precision ground strokes from the baseline while Navratilova eventually used her unmatched fitness to forge an aggressive serve-and-volley game.

6.Björn Borg vs. John McEnroe: Though other tennis rivalries have been contested more often (including McEnroe vs. fellow bad boy Jimmy Connors), none were as incandescent. The 1980 Wimbledon final remains one of the game's greatest matches, with McEnroe winning the fourth-set tiebreak 18-16 only to see Borg win the fifth set 8-6 for his fifth-straight All England title. When McEnroe beat Borg in the 1981 Wimbledon and U.S. Open finals, Borg walked away at age 26 to end their series tied at 7-7. This was another great contrast in styles, with the imaginative and irascible McEnroe pitted against the stoic Swede who generally hugged the baseline.

One thing about Connors vs. JMac was that Connors was past his prime for most of their meetings as he was approaching and WAS in his 30's. Still Connors had some big wins over JMac on JMac's at SW19 and at the USO. the Borg JMac rivalry had Borg at his peak and JMac as the mercurial talent approaching his peak.

The pure hatred that defined the JMac and Connors rivalry was as compelling as the fire and ice dichotomy that marked the JMac and Borg rivalry.
