Lost in Translation: the Mysterious Boos after the RG Final

In fact, you may have caught a major faux pas during the presentation ceremony, when a French official mistranslated Nadal’s comments for the the crowd – elicting a shower of boos and catcalls.

In essence, DBR (Rafa) said, “Roger is the toughest guy I play, the best I lose to, even on clay.” The translator tightened and brightened this up, saying, “Roger’s the toughest guy out there except on clay, where I rock the world!” Or something like that. The crowd went nuts, and after the match the translator ran down to the locker room to apologize to Nadal, while Nadal's people were looking for Federer's people to apologize and see if their boy wanted to do lunch with their boy.

Re: Lost in Translation: the Mysterious Boos after the RG Final

ESPN's version of the bad translation:

Nadal congratulating Federer: "...you are the best player I've ever played, the best player in history, the most complete...just not here."

Fans jeer and boo. JMac laughs. "Tough crowd!"

corrected translation: "...not just here but on all surfaces."

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Re: Lost in Translation: the Mysterious Boos after the RG Final

Are you serious!? That's an embarrasment! Haha, I can't believe a translator would do that, that's terrible.

I thought it was because he said that Roger was the best on all surfaces, and they were booing because Nadal is evidently better than Roger on clay. That's what the NBC commentators made it out to be, but then again I don't think any of them know Spanish or French.

How crazy is that, I was confused as to why they were booing. Silly translator.

Re: Lost in Translation: the Mysterious Boos after the RG Final

I felt so bad for Rafa. The crowd just stopped clapping for him.

Fortunately all the media is correcting it so people will know...but it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

I thought it looked suspicious. After the translator had spoken, Roger's smile seemed to disappear. I wonder what he thought at that moment.

Re: Lost in Translation: the Mysterious Boos after the RG Final

I understand Spanish, but I don't know French. I was totally baffled by the crowd's booing. I just thought, "Typical French Open crowd ... totally rude!"

But now I realize the truth. Talk about a screw up! I can't believe they'd hire such a bad interpreter.

It's sabotage, I tell you. They want bad blood between Rafa and Roger.

Re: Lost in Translation: the Mysterious Boos after the RG Final

yeah, this french open final wasn't so great because Roger didn't get his Roger slam and then Nadal's victory must have been a bit hard for him to enjoy with people booing him. I figured it was a bad translation because Nadal doesn't usually say anything but lots of praise for Roger. I feel like the French fans were pretty mean to Nadal this tournament because they booed him when he beat Mathieu too -- and that day was also Nadal's birthday...Not like I like the guy very much since he was in the way of Roger making history, but I feel for him.

What a disappointing conclusion to this tournament! I hope things were clarified between Roger and Rafa because they seem to have a decent relationship with each other and that is nice.

Big Fan of Roger's Funhouse!!!!

"I wanna tell a quick story. Couple of years ago I was injured and in a hospital in Rome, and it’s a time when everyone else is concentrating on their tennis and playing as well as they can, and I got one note in that hospital room and it was from number one player in the world Roger Federer, wishing me the best...Just a note on how classy he is…" - James Blake, Pacific Life Open 2006

Re: Lost in Translation: the Mysterious Boos after the RG Final

Now I get it. I was listening to Nadal speak and suddenly people started booing. I had no idea why since my French is not that good and Nadal hadn't said anything wrong. I thought the French crowd was just being rude because they didn't want him to win or for no reason at all.

They should get a more competent translator next time.
