Should Rafa Skip The Summer Clay Season And Instead Play The US Open Pre-Tournaments?

As much as I love clay, rather than playing the summer clay season, I would rather see Rafa come to the States and play on hardcourts.

While its wonderful that he wants to win Wimbledon someday (and with this kid I don't rule anything out), I think winning the US Open is a more doable goal. He's already proven that he can win on hardcourts. I think that he only has to get more experience and he can be a major threat at the US Open. And he can only get more experience by coming and playing the pre-tournaments.

(I feel more comfortable posting this because I just heard Pat Mac say the same thing about Rafa having proved himself on hardcourts and a having good chance to someday win the US Open).

No. Nadal has a lot of points in some of those clay events. While he isn't just a claycourter, it is his best surface and he should want to win as many titles as possible. Plus, I've always thought it was rude not to try to defend titles that you've won.

He can play the ones he likes to play, and still be well prepared for the MS tournaments.

Right now the entry lists are only out for the first 2 weeks of the European summer clay season - Rafa is going to play Bastad and Stuttgart.

last year Rafa won the Canada AMS without playing any warm up... besides he likes those clay tourneys!

however I do think he needs to play more than those 2 Master Series...

But he lost in the 1st round of Cincy, and then in the 3rd round of the US Open. The more preparation time, I think that he'd be more consistent and the better he would be at the US Open.

I don't think his US Open would have been any better. And Berdych is no slouch when he's on. Nadal was tired in that first round match.

I think playing on clay is still a good idea for him.

Yes. Nadal needs to take more time off this summer and fall than he did last summer and fall that's for sure.

Rafa should take the entire 4 weeks off and come back for the two Masters Series events.

No no no no no.

Yes, a couple weeks off, because last year he was hurting at the end of the year from over play.

But then he needs to play...on hardcourts.

I love clay. More than anything.

But I also want Rafa to be a great overall player, and be a threat at the other Slams. I really believe he can do damage at the Oz Open and the US Open becuase he is very good on hardcourts. But I think he needs more than 2 tournaments to be prepared to really make a good run at the US Open.

Re: Should Rafa Skip The Summer Clay Season And Instead Play The US Open Pre-Tournaments?

Personally i would like Nadal to play the Pre US Open hardcourts tournaments some years because i think it would be positive for the evolution of his game but i know this is almost an utopia because in the second european clay season is where Nadal strategically always expects to win one or two non mandatory tournaments and to get those points , plus Nadal's camp considers his level on hardcourts is already high and he didn't have a lot of to improve on it unlike grass or carpet .

Plus there is another key factor : If you notice several european players who play better on hard than on clay play those tournaments on clay instead of moving to the States to play on hard . The reason is simply that those guys want to stay on Europe and have the possibility of going home when they fall in a tournament and if they played the US hardcourt season they would be out of home for a lot of weeks.

That last reason can also be applied to Nadal that he would be out of home for almost two months and international series don't deserve that effort at all , only Masters Series and Grand Slam .

Maybe one concrete year he will make that US season but it would be an unique year and maybe for economical reasons .

Well I hope that isn't the reason. He spent the entire spring in Europe, and will be back in Europe for the entire fall season. Ditto all these other European guys.

I hope Rafa is tougher than that.

I don't have much sympathy for them having to be away from home for 2 months to come to the US. My two fav players live so far away that its hard for them to get home. And look at what Aussies, Paradorn from Asia, and the other South Americans have to do.
