Wilander: "I hope Ljubicic and Nalbandian step up to the next level"

"What would be good now would be for Ljubicic and Nalbandian to get to the next level and win a Grand Slam. If they managed that, it would give the men's circuit a real boost, and make it like it was in the 80s when there was a group of us who knew that on our day, we could win any of the majors that we entered. There was Edberg, Becker, McEnroe, Lendl, Connors and then me, and we all ended up winning at least four Grand Slams.

I think that Ljubicic could cause an upset against Nadal, as he plays the kind of tennis that could knock the Spaniard off his game. Nalbandian leads Federer in head-to-heads, which proves that he could well get through."

Now there's an opinion that I can respect, take note PMac. Mind you, I don't know where he's coming from with his theory that Ljubicic could upset Nadal tomorrow, the only thing in his favour is that the weather will apparently be nice and sunny.

Ljubo for US Open champion!

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Theoretically, he's right.
Practically, not so sure. Federer wants it so bad this time I don't think Nalby can stop him at the moment (or anyone else!). Nadal is definitely feeling the pressure, and nerves have started to kick in, but he can always unleash the tennis beast in him, and irritate Ljube. Both semis will be tight, and if Nalbandian and Ljubicic continue playing the way they are, they won't retire Slamless.

Let's face it. The final of RG will be Federer-Nadal. No way David or Ivan will do upsets here. But they can win a GS this year. Both Wimbly or USO, they have the right weapons to do it. But there is a huge problem. Roger. If he plays as he can, well, he will end the season with at least 3 GS. Only RG is questonable.

Born as a champion!

on clay,

nalbandian has a greater chance to beat federer than ljubicic to beat nadal...

but anyway, that won't happen tomorrow

I am almost certain that Rafael will beat Ivan (3/4 sets).

David vs. Roger almost impossible to predict.

The current greatness league of active players in order of achievements to date (a factual comparison rather than fan biased assessment):

Federer 17 GS, 6 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.
Nadal 14 GS, 27 Master Series, 1 Olympic Gold.
Djokovic 9 GS, 4 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.

Nalbandian could have the game to beat Federer, but it's a GS SF. Which is a big no for David.

What you say sounds quite reasonable, although I am hoping that when it comes to performing well in the late stages of a GS, David is a different player after beating Federer in the TMC (with the added confidence)...The match vs. Baghdatis in Melbourne would suggest he isn't, but apparently he was injured there (abdominal) and unable to serve very well.

unless he plays against Malisse... a much bigger headcase than him

I think King David can get through to the final... Vamos David!

I hope Nalbandian can win but even though he has a winning record over Federer the world no.1 has won 5 of the past 6 meetings.

Neither do I, particularly after a rather poor performance against Benneteau. Nevertheless, I like Wilander commenting, even if I do not always agree with him.

Re: Wilander: "I hope Ljubicic and Nalbandian step up to the next level"

I don't know which final I'd like most; Fed-Nadal for the rivalry or Ljubo-Nalby for the impact on the tennis world.

I don't like hypocrites, but even worse are the ones who think it's OK to be an asshole as long as you are not hypocritical.
