Brad Gilbert gives Djokovic the kiss of death

He was talking about how Djokovic is the only player left on the bottom half of the draw who has any shot at taking out Nadal.

But seriously, if Nadal continues to allow people to take the ball early against him by hitting with average depth, Djokovic has a shot to really test him. I don't think he is ready for the big win yet, but if his strokes are on like they were in the first two sets against Haas or Gonzo, Nadal will have a LOT of problems.

In today's match against Hewitt, Hewitt was very successful pushing Nadal out wide with the BH CC taken early, but then didn't have enough on the FH to put him away because of Rafa's incredible defensive ability. Djokovic would be different as he DOES have the FH and BH to do the job. His serve will also allow him to set up some points, i.e. his serve out wide in the deuce court has been effective so far so a serve out wide, inside out FH or FH dtl combo will be the plan.

He first has to beat Monfils but that looks almost like a certainty right now. If the big moment doesn't rattle him, Nadal vs Djokovic could be one hell of a QF.

Re: Brad Gilbert gives Djokovic the kiss of death

First of all, Djokovic-Monfils is far from being over. And concerning the topic, Djokovic has the weapons to make a match out of an hypothetical encounter against Nadal, but he hasn´t got neither the consistency to execute his game throughout 5 sets at an optimum level nor the stamina to back this up. Therefore Nadal won´t have a lot of problems with Nole, I foresee another 3-1 win for Nadal (and I´m being generous as much as I like Nole) if this match occurs the day after tomorrow. Go get a clue about the players, dude :retard:

In my opinion, one of the reasons why Hewitt gives Rafa such a hard time on the court is that he's patient and usually very consistent. Not a lot of players can be patient against Rafa, point for point, during an entire match.

In all honesty, I haven't seen enough of Djokovic to assess his chances against Rafa.

Of course the most likely result is Nadal wearing him down and Djokoivc not being up for the big occasion. I didn't say otherwise. However, Djokovic does have the game to bother Nadal on clay which can't be said about too many players on the tour.

Looks like Monfils awoke from the dead and is playing well again. Looks like a TB.

Disagree, having the game it´s not enough to say one can put his rival into a LOT of problems, consistency and stamina also count a decisive role and Nole is weak in these departments despite having loads of talent. I can name a lot of players that have the weapons (game) to beat Nadal on clay but you won´t find more than a few with a realistic chance at defeating him in a best-of-five format, and no, I don´t think Nole is one of them atm.

I'm not sure. Novak is brillant but goes wild too often especially when he has to finish the point easily. That's the case right now against Monfils.
And against Nadal, he will often have to finish the point.

If ND had all that, we'd have called him a contender for the title, not a potential Nadal "tester" for 1-11/2 sets.

Re: Brad Gilbert gives Djokovic the kiss of death

Djokovic is through. Let's see what happens.. I hope something comes up. I'd want Nadal to lose to Djokovic because I enjoy seeing him play and think he has enough chances and weapons against Nadal (though highly impossible). But it would waste a Nadal-Fed blockbuster final.

Re: Brad Gilbert gives Djokovic the kiss of death

Djokovic needs to get to the net more, he had Monflis out wide alot of times where monflis just blocked it back for an easy volley, but Djokovic stayed back and the piont kept going for 2 or 3 more shots against Nadal he will lose those points.

He won few points at the net, 2/12 or something like that. He missed several easy volley, and his dropshot were awful. He really must improve that, don't know if he's better usually, but his game around the net was not very impressive today.

I know, I´m well aware of Nole´s potential (and weaknesses) long time ago, surely longer ago than the majority of posters here, thanks

Re: Brad Gilbert gives Djokovic the kiss of death

now that Gael match was finnished, I can chime in. Novak has a game to challenge the king of clay , his flat shots will give Rafa plenty of trouble to run down but the main question is fitness and endurance for him. He has a good 2 days of rest as he looked a bit tired today . Rafa is a favourite and I won't mind him if he continues his run and it should be a very challenging and exciting match

If anyone has a shot it's Novak, but only if Rafa is severely injured or has a bad banana shoved up his throat. Gilbert is nothing if not amusing.
