Bud Collins (Who?)

I have never seen or head this guy before, until now! He is doing some strange interviews, and shorts for the eurosport highlight show. He is a very odd guy, and doesnt seem to know about tennis Who or what the hell is this guy? And where has he come from

He pronounces sharapova; chiropova I cant believe anyone would pronounce her name like that Surely anyone who is involved in tennis would know that there is no one else in the world who pronounces her name like that? The eurosport team have been ripping and abusing him every night about that pronounciation

Re: Bud Collins (Who?)

Bud's quite funny. He's been around for a long time and is in the Tennis Hall of Fame. Written tennis books and commentates in America. He is the one who came up with a lot of the players nicknames like "The Barcelona Bumblebee" for ASV. Here's his site - http://www.budcollinstennis.com/

Re: Bud Collins (Who?)

bud collins is a legend.

inducted into the tennis hall of fame in the early 1990s

was the annoucner for CBS for a while, he was the man who dubb the McEnroe/Borg tie breaker, "the battle of 18-16". he knows sooo much about the history of the game and if a wonderful writter, sure he cant prenounch alot of the european girls names but he does know what he is talking about most of the time, and its always a joy to listen to what he has to say.

I cannot stand Djokovic
NEW YORK METS

I'm an American who loves clay tennis and the clay season...what is wrong with that picture?

He pronounces Sharapova... Shah-RAHP-ova... because that's the unamericanized way of pronouncing it.

I'm sure many will respond to this, but Bud Collins has been reporting tennis for much longer than most posters here have been alive. He was originally associated with a Boston newspaper, has done commentary on television for years and years, and puts out a respected volume called the Encyclopedia of Tennis. He's generally considered a walking history book of tennis. His trousers are a running joke and he tries to outdo himself at every tournament.

Bud may seem like a clueless old man sometimes, but he knows tennis better than half of the commentators out there. I absolutely love him (and his pants).

I guess he has been told to act like a clown for eurosport then I didnt realise he would be so well known though, hes never featured on any coverage here. Alot of the other US commentators are.

He was never a professional player.

He's very knowlegable about tennis though. I think maybe you are too young to remember Collins in his heyday. He was a bit annoying as a commentator because he nattered on about past players a lot and other trivia. Not my favorite thing as a commentator. Still, I think he is tremendously respeced by most people in tennis.

Re: Bud Collins (Who?)

Bud plays tennis, and has played with very famous people including Presidents and Prime Ministers and such, but he was never a pro. He has been writing about the sport since he was in college I believe. He knows more about the players than anyone on the planet, but his recall may be slowing down with age, so he makes more mistakes in live reports now than he used to. He tries to pronounce all the player names in the native style (Nav ra TEEL ova was another one). He is a very hard working man and I have a ton of respect for him, even if he is a bit goofy sometimes. He knows his stuff.

Best twitter posts of the epic match:

@dougrobson - Whoever is supplying Mahut with hair gel needs to ink a sponsorship deal now.

@Wimbledon - FYI, with @Wimbledon live scoring devices, please add 50 to the games in the fifth set of the Isner v Mahut match.

@HolterMedia - Nice to see that a three-day test has come to tennis here @wimbledon.
