Re: Federer`s Serve not as good as before?

He is still the best at serving into the corners of the box and down the centre line.

The current greatness league of active players in order of achievements to date (a factual comparison rather than fan biased assessment):

Federer 17 GS, 6 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.
Nadal 14 GS, 27 Master Series, 1 Olympic Gold.
Djokovic 9 GS, 4 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.

Re: Federer`s Serve not as good as before?

His serve is different. Better in some situations but not in others. He has dropped the pace a little and he hits less aces nowadays but it is the most accurate serve in the world and great for setting up a point. In fact, it has been developed in a way that makes it more suitable for clay.

Re: Federer`s Serve not as good as before?

I think his serve is not as effective as it once was. He used to be able to hit big serves and corners in tight situations but he cant seem to do that anymore and his 1st serve% isnt as high as it ought to be. I think the grass season is when I will really be able to tell how much it has changed. I think part of the problem is that he isnt as confident on clay but come grass season, I think it will be a different story.

Its really hard to tell if Roger has changed his serve at all, seeing as his service motion is the same for all of his serves.

Actually it is not. He arches his back more when he serves now. This gives him more spin and less pace. The few times that he does use pace, the back is relatively straight.

Need ideas for a new signature...

Re: Federer`s Serve not as good as before?

He still has a good serve. It seems a bit different, because he is on clay, but it hasn't changed that much, a few things, but not really.

Serve is still very good - I think it's always tended to be more about placement and accuracy and variation than out and out aces and speed.

Can go off a bit, and obviously it's slightly neutralised on clay as is everyone else's so he doesn't get quite as many easy points off it.

Re: Federer`s Serve not as good as before?

his serve disappeared in the massu match...and disappears too much in the critical moments. I wouldnt say its all that accurate anymore in the crucial moments. In 2004, he used to always throw down big serves like sampras on big pts.its just that nobody except maybe nadal is able to capitalize because the rest of his game is so darn good.

on clay, he is serving the right way. But on hardcourt at the aussie open, davydenko was serving harder than he was.

Fed can still hit plenty of big serves when he needs to. His serve will have off days like any other weapon can be off.

His serve hasn't changed in my opinion But in the key moments it can disappear (Shanghai 2005 for example)..
