Fastest claycourts ever..

Never seen claycourts play as fast as they play at this RG.. Like hardcourts.. Blake was hitting winners from all over the place. Now Tursunov, normally clueless on clay, is doing the same. And the number of unreturned serve in a match of two very decent returners is unbelievably high.. Nalbadyan not returning 3 serves out of 5? He does better on hardcourts or even grass..

I guess organizers really want to become venue of Roger's Slam..

Those are some good points - sadly not seen a great deal of coverage so fa this year but I also have the impression that the courts are quicker than clay courts tend to be.

Just looking at match stats Nalbandian is winning a mere 21% of recieving points - not a figure one would normally expect

Well, maybe today, but yesterday with the humidity, light rain, it was very very heavy and slow...Grosjean said he played with the loosest stringing of his entire career to try to cope with the damp conditions.

Re: Fastest claycourts ever..

May just be amazing serving - 6 points against serve in the first ten games of the second set!

Re: Fastest claycourts ever..

Nalbandian not breaking someone on clay for two sets? Having just two pitiful breakpoints? Amazing serving.. Tursunov is a decent server.. But Nalbandian?

They even plan to put some grass (painted in red) on court the night before the finals...
Nadal might be surprised...

Re: Fastest claycourts ever..

I agree with the tenor of the initial post. For me it's also proven fact that -under same conditions- Roland Garros was (almost continously?!) sped up during the last 10, 15 years. Especially the underground under the layer of clay seems to be very hard and stiff and this can make such a court play like a (slow) hardcourt with a thin dust layer on it.

The right thing would be to let each surface have its own specifics. Not every claycourt or hardcourt or whatever must have the same speed, but the tendency clearly should be to have grasscourt/carpet courts (ultra)fast and to have the vast majority of all claycourts (clearly) slower than the rest of all.

To speed up clay - or to slow down grass. I like one option even less, but generally I don't like both.

Carlos --- C'MON Lleyton!!! --- Kiwi!!! --- Jürgen --- Juan

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

Re: Fastest claycourts ever..

If it's a sunnt day it's not that strange. Yesterday, Vassallo Arguello was using huge topspin forehands and moon balls and Grosjean coudln't hurt him at all. It was really slow and the argie used it well

But i agree with Neelyy. Every surface should keep its basic characteristics

"Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another" .. Madonna

Drooling after Schuettler, Bolelli, Volandri, Starace (short haired version), ToJo, Tursunov, Alves, Petzschner, Simon, Qureshi, Steve Johnson

Yesterday it was not surface. It was moisture that made balls heavier. The surface itself was nearly as fast.

Re: Fastest claycourts ever..

Yeah I believe that there's not much clay on the surface, similar to the courts in Rome.

Re: Fastest claycourts ever..

If I am not mistaken Boris Becker in late 80's and early 90's reached semi-final 3 times. He said the RG courts were harder and faster than most clay courts when he was playing. Fastest year at RG was about 10 years ago when Kafelnikov beat Stich.

The current greatness league of active players in order of achievements to date (a factual comparison rather than fan biased assessment):

Federer 19 GS, 6 Year End Masters, 26 Master Series.
Nadal 15 GS, 30 Master Series, 1 Olympic Gold.
Djokovic 12 GS, 5 Year End Masters, 30 Master Series.

Re: Fastest claycourts ever..

RG courts have almost always been amongst the faster ones...especially if it's sunny (admittably not really so this year).

Re: Fastest claycourts ever..

Moya couldn't return well Davydenko's serve, and this is sad.........

Tursunov is playing baseball and was catapulting Nalbandian to outside the court while he was hitting most of the balls inside the court

This may be my impression, but I think the balls are bouncing relatively low, going to the comfort zone of this kind of attack's play, helping even more the fast courts

This is becoming a big joke......

It's a conspiracy you know. Just to get Roger the one slam he doesn't have.
