Federer @ Suzanne Lenglen

Is this the first time that he don't play at Center Court since he is N°1?

Re: Federer @ Suzanne Lenglen

No idea.

What's the big deal?

I'm sure Wimbledon sticks him on court 1 for the odd match when he's there, earlier on usually.

That's weird...They also scheduled Mauresmo AND Grosjean on Lenglen.

Re: Federer @ Suzanne Lenglen

Might seem wierd but they do need to give other seeds like Nalbandian etc a sniff of Chatrier as well in the early rounds.

They probably want to rotate players around to attract crowds to both courts. Even the FFT darling Momo will play on SL tomorrow.

Re: Federer @ Suzanne Lenglen

Nah, he was on Lenglen for his matches against Almagro and Moya last year (the latter did surprise me a little, but then Nadal v Grosjean was scheduled on Chatrier at the same time), and also for his first round against Vliegen in 2004. Plus he was on Court 1 at Wimbledon for his matches against Falla and Karlovic in 2004, then his second round versus Minar and QF versus Gonzalez last year. These two seem to be the only Slams that sometimes relegate the top two players to the second court, although Federer said he didn't mind that at Wimbledon last year. Outside those two events, the last time I can recall him not playing on centre court at a tournament was Cincy 03 against Nalbandian, which was put out on Grandstand.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Re: Federer @ Suzanne Lenglen

SL is a show court, no embarrassment playing there
Its not as big as PC, but its like Armstrong v/s Arthur Ashe at the USO
Good thing too, to let everyone get a taste of PC

yeah, and the number 1 seed never plays on anything but Arthur Ashe stadium. if you are a top seed at the USO, it is an embarrassment to play on Louis Armstrong. the USO puts their top seeds on Arthur Ashe and Ashe only. then again, the USO has night matches.

I dont think its an embarrassment to play on Armstrong -- do the players feel that? Certainly I have purchased tickets for top players' matches at Armstrong
The USO doing this for the top seed does not make it the norm or the proper way to do things. Wimbledon has had Pete Sampras play on the graveyard of champions for example
I can't imagine there is anything humiliating/embarrassing about playing on one of the other courts other than Center, in an early round for the No. 1

I have never been to a slam...would you say that PC vs SL or Arm vs Ashe is the same as Stadium vs. Grandstand at Miami? B/c that would be a pretty huge difference.

Re: Federer @ Suzanne Lenglen

well it means that you aren't that important in the media and don't make a lot of headlines. it isn't an embarrassment, just not very normal. i'd rather play on arthur ashe than armstrong.

Re: Federer @ Suzanne Lenglen

I like the fact that the top players and even some players a tier below share Chatrier and Lenglen.
What's pathetic and embarrassing is that Gaudio is now playing on Court 7.

I've never been to Roland Garros, so I can only base this on what I have seen on TV
Certainly there is no doubt that AA is the big show court at the USO
Armstrong is big, but not nearly as impressive as AA
Grandstand has a distinctly smaller cozier feel
