Murray's tactics (or lack of)

I'm watching Murray vs Monfils now and we all know about Murray's fitness problems. However he still thinks he can outgrind Monfils in a four to five hour battle. And he keeps playing relatively safe, which results in endless rallies (cause Monfils is playing the same game and rightly so cause he also knows Murray will break down eventually).

I've seen Murray do this time and time again and in the end the result is always the same: he loses due to a lack of fitness. Last time I saw him against Lisnard in Monte Carlo and he also lost cause he couldn't move anymore. Don't you think Murray should adapt his game to his fitness level. If you know you can't outlast your opponent you should try to avoid long rallies and take some more risk. It's not like he can't play like that, he just choses to play safe all the time.

btw, I started typing before the injury timeout

Re: Murray's tactics (or lack of)

Why not play safe and let Gael self destruct? It's working well so far. Plus Andy has been mixing in aggression with patience.

So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

Re: Murray's tactics (or lack of)

the way he's playing now, he's not using a lot of energy. He's almost walking in the rallies.

If it goes to 5 sets this match could be a no-decision, double technical knockout.

Re: Murray's tactics (or lack of)

I'm not questioning his current tactics, cause atm he can't really do anything. I'm talking about the first two sets when he was still healthy and it seemed he wanted to play long rallies. And that's just plain stupid when you've already lost numerous matches with fitness problems.

He ought to go to Pat Etcheberry in Saddlebrook or some such person and really dedicate himself to his fitness.

Murray acts as if he's 36 years old with a jacked up back... time for him to retire.

I can't help but picture him as a contestant on The Biggest Loser. Would the other contestants give him competition?

Re: Murray's tactics (or lack of)

Well personally I think he is a better player when he is attacking. And as you point out the more attacking the less of a drain on his fitness.

Re: Murray's tactics (or lack of)

I was wondering about the same thing. It seems Andy has developed a curious clay court mentality, plus he loves mixing it up and trying different shots. No doubt he would be more effective playing with a game plan. A coach would help.
