Average match riddled with unforced errors, but tension was palpable.
Tiafoe is a great shotmaker, but just short of being dubbed a ball basher. Kind of reminds me of Tsonga 2008 version. Very explosive!
As for Goffin, if it weren't for his on-court tennis IQ which is brilliant, he'd have lost the match. On paper, he shouldn't last against the big serving, big hitting kinds.
To his credit, he varied his shots consistently, avoiding feeding Tiafoe with too much pace (though he can generate loads of it off his forehand wing), and his variety with depth kind of frustrated Tiafoe on the long rallies. David, however will need to get himself a better serve ASAP and work on returning big servers (perhaps practice on the outside courts with Isner or hire Roddick for two weeks) if he wishes to keep his top -20 ranking, cause Tiafoe is gonna bulge up pretty soon, and things might not be this close then.
Btw Goffin is just irritating tool.
There's no way David's gonna beat big serving, big hitting Goliaths without irritating them.
